Recognition of Dr. Magula
At this time, the Board would like to recognize Dr. Sheila Magula.
Dr. Magula has served our district superbly as the division superintendent during the 2005-06 school year, while the Board conducted a search for a new superintendent following the retirement of Timothy R. Jenney. Formerly the deputy superintendent, she stepped forward to take the helm, making certain that the School Board and the larger community understood that she was assuming leadership on a temporary basis only. As we are all aware, this commitment involved much personal sacrifice because Sheila Magula literally dedicated untold hours to her new role as guardian of the school district. There is no such thing as a 40-hour work week in Dr. Magula’s world because she had a heartfelt desire that progress would continue and a recognition that progress takes great effort. Under her leadership a compensation study has been completed and its recommendations implemented, plans for the new alternative education center are beginning to take shape in an exciting way, effective operating and capital budgets have been developed and communications outreaches to schools and employees have helped foster a positive atmosphere in what just as easily could have been perceived as an uncertain time. Her accomplishments are indeed worthy of our recognition. So, on this your last official School Board meeting as our superintendent, we wish to thank you, Dr. Magula, for your dedicated service and many contributions to public education in Virginia Beach!
Mr. Chairman, this concludes our recognitions for this evening.
