6. A. 2006 State Honor Bands
The School Board is pleased to recognize the 2006 State Honor Bands.
The Cox, Kellam and Princess Anne High School Band programs are recipients of the 2006 Virginia Honor Band award. Bands achieving honor band status must demonstrate comprehensive success in the areas of concert and marching band performance. These bands have earned the Honor Band award through superior ratings received at the State Marching Band Festival, as well as, the District Festival. These bands exemplify commitment to the highest standards in music education and performance. The following school bands have earned designation as a 2006 Virginia Honor Band:
Cox High School , W. Bryan Wills, Band Director;6.B. 2006 Virginia Music Educators Association Blue Ribbon Schools
The School Board is now pleased to recognize the 2006 Blue Ribbon Schools, as designated by the Virginia Music Educators Association.
The following schools have been recognized as Blue Ribbon Schools by the Virginia Music Educators Association. These schools’ music programs were awarded this distinction after earning superior ratings for each ensemble at their respective district festivals.
Schools earning the 2006 Blue Ribbon School distinction are:
Brandon Middle School , whose music department is comprised of Amy Pallett, Director of Bands, Sharon Garcia, Orchestra Director, and Michelle Powell, Chorus Director.
Kempsville Middle School , whose music department is comprised of Lisa Hagen, Director of Bands, Diane Taylor, Orchestra Director, and Suzanne Smith, Chorus Director.
Kemps Landing Magnet School ’s music department comprised of Kenneth Poe, Director of Bands, Paul Baird, Orchestra Director, and DeLena Poe, Chorus Director.
Princess Anne High School ’s music department comprised of John Boyd, Director of Bands, Mary Hughes, Orchestra Director, and Donald Nultemeier, Chorus Director.
(It should be noted that Kempsville High School’s music department also earned this distinction and will be recognized at our next meeting, as they were unable to attend this evening.

6.C. 2006 Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education Teacher of the Year
The School Board is pleased to recognize Lillie Foriest, a teacher at the Adult Learning Center, for receiving the 2006 Joan E. D. Kushnir Teacher of the Year Award from the Virginia Association for Adult and Continuing Education (known as VAACE).
This annual award is presented by VAACE at their yearly conference and recognizes exemplary professional practice and service to adult learners. Mrs. Foriest was selected from among adult educators nominated statewide for this award. During the 2005-06 school year, Mrs. Foriest assisted 141 students in earning the GED credential. Mrs. Foriest has been teaching GED preparation since the inception of the “Race to GED” initiative in January 2004, and she was one of the instructors who helped develop the Fast Track curriculum when the Virginia Beach Adult Learning Center became a pilot Fast Track site.

6.D. 2005 National Outstanding Health Occupations New Teacher of the Year
The School Board is pleased to recognize Sharon Ross-Clemmons, instructor at the Technical and Career Education Center, for receiving the 2005 National Outstanding Health Occupations New Teacher of the Year Award from the Health Occupations Education Division of the Association for Career and Technical Education.
Mrs. Ross-Clements was elected by her peers as Region II Outstanding Health and Medical Science New Teacher of the Year in 2005, and then as the State 2005 Health Occupations New Teacher of the Year by the Health and Medical Science Division of the Virginia Department of Education. In December 2005, Ms. Ross-Clements was named National Outstanding Health Occupations New Teacher of the Year.
Congratulations on this National honor!
6. E. Outstanding Attendance – April 2006
The School Board is now pleased to recognize the schools with the highest rates of student attendance for the month of April 2006 . Representatives from these schools are invited to come forward as their school’s name is announced.
Creeds Elementary School , with an attendance rate of 97.38% is the recipient of the elementary school attendance certificate. Accepting the school’s certificate is Principal Robin Davenport and SCA Vice President Ian H. Sharing the outstanding attendance honor for April is Plaza Elementary School, with an attendance rate of 97.38%. Accepting the school’s certificate is Principal Mary Daniels. Congratulations to the students and staff at both Creeds and Plaza Elementary Schools for their outstanding attendance in April!
Kemps Landing Magnet School , with an attendance rate of 97.95%, receives the attendance certificate, for middle schools for April. Accepting the school’s certificate for Kemps Landing Magnet is Principal Randi Riesbeck. Congratulations to the students and staff at Kemps Landing Magnet School for their outstanding student attendance in April!
At the high school level, the attendance certificate for April 2006 goes to Ocean Lakes High School who reported a 95.69% student attendance rate. Accepting the school’s certificate is Interim Principal Cheryl Askew, Assistant Principal Norman Benwitz, and Senior Devon W., who has had perfect attendance his entire academic career – kindergarten to present! Congratulations to Ocean Lakes High students and staff for their outstanding attendance in April!
6.F. Most Improved Attendance – April 2006
The School Board will now recognize the schools with the most improved attendance for the month of April 2006.
A review of attendance data indicates that North Landing Elementary School had the highest percent of most improved attendance for April with an improvement rate of 2.28% for student attendance. Accepting North Landing’s attendance certificate is Principal Julie Risney and Office Associate Sharon Campbell. Congratulations to students and staff at North Landing Elementary for their improved attendance!
Independence Middle School had the highest percent of most improved attendance at the middle school level with an improvement rate of 1.77% for student attendance. Accepting Independence Middle’s certificate is Assistant Principal Bruce Rector, Academic Coordinator Brian Gray, Science Teacher Sue Dillon, and student Rachel F. Congratulations to Independence Middle School!
And, Salem High School had the highest percent of most improved attendance at the high school level with an improvement rate of 1.29% for student attendance. Accepting Salem’s certificate is Assistant Principal Ann Shows. Congratulations to students and staff at Salem High School for their improved attendance in April 2006!
