Rita Sweet Bellitto was elected to the School Board in 2004 and was first elected vice-chair in 2006. A former civil engineer with the City of Virginia Beach for 11 years, Mrs. Bellitto was awarded the City Manager’s Award for Excellence in Public Service in 1998 for her work on the Lake Gaston Project.  She is currently employed as a part-time online reader, scoring various types of national academic tests. Mrs. Bellitto has served as a member of the school division’s Textbook Adoption Committee for sixth-grade history and the Virginia Beach City Council Task Force on Property Tax Relief for Senior Citizens. She is also a member of the Rosemont Forest PTA, the Old Donation Center PTA and Friends of the Virginia Beach Library. Mrs. Bellitto earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from Stanford University, a master’s in public administration from Troy State University and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Bucknell University. Her two children are enrolled in Virginia Beach City Public Schools.
