The original Newtown Elementary was completed in 1970. During the construction phase of the new school, it continued to house students until the new building was completed. After the students and staff moved into the new facility, the old building is in the process or being torn down to make way for the ball fields and parking areas.
Newtown Elementary is a prototype plan used by the school division for 13 other elementary schools to include: Christopher Farms, Linkhorn Park, Seatack, New Castle, Bayside, Kempsville Meadows, Woodstock, Hermitage, Three Oaks, Brookwood, Windsor Woods, Arrowhead and Diamond Springs.
