Great Neck Middle School
Public Comments

This page contains results from an online survey that was conducted January 15 -25, 2008. The intent of the survey was to seek input from parents of students attending Great Neck Middle, Hermitage, Thoroughgood, John B. Dey, Trantwood, and King's Grant elementary schools along with residents of nearby neighborhoods for the construction of the new Great Neck Middle School and the adjacent Meadowridge Park.

1. How do you use GNMS today? (Boy/Girl Scouts, civic meetings, sport use, etc…)

  • My son attends GNMS (my daughter did 2000-2003).  He plays sports (football, basketball, and baseball).  He has played 4 years in GNAA for the Buckeyes in the City League.  Athletics and the availability of fields are as important as is the academic environment of the school.

  • My son Jon is a 7th grader at GNMS.  He is also on the school soccer team.  He has, in the past 5 - 6 years, played on various recreation league sports (soccer, lacrosse, and football) that have utilized GNMS for practice.  Jon is a boy scout (Star rank) with Troop 63.   I also have an eight year old who plays recreational soccer, lacrosse, and football.  All three sports utilized GNMS at some point for practice. I personally have used the track and stadium for exercise routines. I realize that the stadium must go but continuing community access to the fields is critical for our youth sports programs.  This site has been utilize by hundreds (possibly thousands) of kids growing up in mainly Great Neck but other areas as well.  I feel as a taxpayer that this is a small price to pay for the incredible value it provides for children and young adults growing up in our community.  Please listen to our plea and continue to provide a place for our children to be involved in healthy activities.  Sincerely,  Susan K. Hazelbaker

2. How would you see any uses changing with a new GNMS?
  • Hopefully, a new building will allow more space for community access.
  • I would anticipate seeing the facility ever more accommodating to the community for multiple uses.
  • We would hope no uses would change.
  • I would hope that there will be no changes
  • Keep it as it is.  Available for late nights practices of comments sports practices/activities
  • Use of property should be restricted to school-related activities.  Regional recreational activities ought to be confined to regional recreation facilities already existing in the area, i.e., Great Neck, Bayville, and Kempsville.
  • The football games typically played at GNMS would need to be relocated during the construction phase for fall 2009-Fall 2011, based on current schedule.  Starting fall 2012 hopefully games could resume at the new GNMS field under the lights.
  • Current facility could be replaced
  • I attended the meeting tonight.  I am impressed with the intent.  In particular I liked the second idea of staff parking on both sides of the building.
  • Taking lights away would affect all rec. programs which are there to instill fitness, responsibility, sportsmanship and most of all these programs keep the kids to busy to find trouble.
  • GNMS would still be used the way it currently is.
  • Fields and recreation area that will encourage after school sports and activities.
  • Without the lights the recreation teams will have to find a new place to play.
  • If there were no lights on the field, the football league could not function
  • I would hope the multiple uses now going on would continue.
  • Without lights for the sports field we could not have night games.
  • Same...athletics.
  • Better fields
  • There would be no where for our children to play ball.  As a single parent, recreation league sports are away for me to keep my son off the streets.  Without the Buckeyes, their structure and guidance, I don't know where we would be.
  • It’s very old and dated in regards to middle schools.
  • Without the lights on the field, practice would have to be earlier in the day.  Our son attends a private school for children with learning disabilities.  He would not be able to attend earlier practices.
  • If the new school is the same as the existing school then I see no changes in how it is used.
  • Would expect any changes to be a positive improvement over the current facility.
  • If there are no lights there will be no place to practice or hold games after day time hours
  • My biggest concern would be the loss for lighting for the football field as this would effectively end the programs.
  • No night time Football games
  • A posted schedule when the lights are going to be on - and a reminder to the sports to stay off of the tracks when it is open to the public.
  • I feel the school could use a change, but the stadium is a historical landmark. There is no other stadium like it around!! It could use a facelift, but keep the stadium!!
  • If the lights do not remain, then how do we as parents continue to encourage our children to play organized outdoor sports at night?
  • I would like to make sure we provide the great neck community lights for community activities.
  • Change is great but I feel taking away the lighted football field/track but be a great loss to the community
  • I would hope use would not have to change at all, unless it meant increased use of the fields (in an efficient manner of course.)
  • Would like them to remain the same
  • The uses would increase because people enjoy a new environment. It will make students; faculty and staff appreciate their surroundings more.
  • I would like the community to still be able to use Great Neck Middle School.
  • There would be no place for these kids to practice in the evening
  • It will probably be the same or there may be more field hockey/soccer use...
  • If there are no lights, then practice would be virtually impossible (and UNSAFE).
  • If there is no outdoor lighting then there would be no more football. Flag football games are held at night, and many Buckeye practices are held at night.
  • Please allow the fields to be used for recreation sports along with restroom facilities.
  • Without lights on the fields this would be a tremendous loss to the buckeye program. this field has been a great asset in helping train our boys not only in football but also in teamwork, sportsmanship, hard work and dedication
  • A more user friendly driveway and parking lot.
  • Lights are needed at the fields
  • Without the lights, we would miss out on most practices.
  • With better irrigation and lit fields the new field would be a welcome addition to the community
  • Hopefully GNMS will continue to be an integral part to the Great Neck community.  A new GNMS should be able to expand and enhance this community involvement
  • It is important for the fields to continue to be lighted and irrigated.
  • If the lights are not part of the new school, this would drastically affect my children's sports activities.
  • Make sure to keep equivalent resources for football lights etc... It is nice to have sturdy stands vs. the open stands ...  It would be a shame to improve the quality of the building and loose the quality of the grounds and the equipment/support buildings available to both the school and the local community since there is not equivalent available at this level.
  • Lighted fields around the Great Neck area are already taken with fall baseball, lacrosse, youth soccer and flag football.
  • I believe that they could hold additional events at the school.
  • No evening activities / practices without lighted field or area
  • A big change would be that my son will not have the opportunity to play football because the fields would not be lighted anymore.
  • I think the new GNMS will continue to be a focal point of positive Community Activity for the City's young people, with the Great Neck Community at large benefiting from the new school.
  • Nice new school.
  • NO more Friday night football games!
  • We hope there will not be any.
  • More pressure on the school for organizations to use the fields
  • I am worried about the rodent problem that will be created when you tear down the stadium.  Also, I hear the construction area will be on the football field, which means the neighbors in Meadowridge will hear all of the noise.  And are there proper plans in place for asbestos removal.
  • More use
  • We think a new school is great and a new and improved athletic field would be great too.
  • Not much
  • Not much
  • Not much change
  • None
  • Not much change
  • I would hope that the current uses would not have to be changed at all.
  • I would like to think that a better means of maintaining the sports fields would be incorporated i.e. field maintenance, building structures; re-surface the track and parking area, etc.
  • NO
  • None
  • Children will attend
  • It would basically not be usable at night
  • No change, we would like to continue to use the fields for sports, including play at night.
  • None
  • No Changes.
  • No more evening games for my children.
  • Unfortunately, my son will probably be out of GNMS before any of this happens, but I would hope the school could still be used for community meetings, as it is now, and that it will continue to be a practice and game site for the Buckeye football program, as well as other recreation league sports, like basketball and baseball.
  • I hope to continue having flag football there on Friday nights!!
  • We need lights for practice
  • Loss of football lights.  I walk around track while they practice 6:30 to 8:15.  Rules do not allow for earlier practice.  It gets dark in mid OCT by 7 pm...
  • Would like to see that football will remain on GNM property - may individuals from community participate.
  • Only expanding
  • Hopefully all uses will continue. Everyone pays taxes (whether they have kids in the system or not), so free and full use by the community should continue.
  • Well if there aren't any lights - I would be concerned that there would be substantially less opportunity to use the fields.  Safety concerns too.  I also think the more a community uses a place the better is for all involved.
  • Expanded use due to increased size
  • I would hope we could maintain all our current uses.
  • As the community grows, we will require greater usage and flexibility for those uses to fulfill community wide requirements. We cannot afford to take a step backwards in capability.
  • Without the lights we would be adversely affected
  • If a football/track field with lights is not incorporated into the new design it will destroy the sense of community our family and many others have enjoyed for generations. It keeps the kids off the street and on the fields.
  • A GREAT disservice would be apparent as the facility as a whole would not be accessible to the community should the lights not be included in the final design.  Additionally, the Buckeye football league would be denied the opportunity to practice and play.
  • No lights for games
  • I hope nothing changes it is the only place in the area that has lights
  • Depending on whether the field lights are replaced, sports use may cease in the fall/winter when the sun goes down early
  • Must save the practice field lights.
  • None
  • Very difficult to practice with so many teams without a lighted field
  • No night time practice for many different sports if lights are not kept.
  • If the fields are not lit, football as we know it in the Great Neck area would be changed forever.
  • No lights would greatly affect the children in the area. We don't have alternate facilities with lights.
  • The lighted fields are necessary for all buckeye practices and games
  • Continue to be not only an excellent school but also a place for community events and activities, especially sports.
  • If the fields are not lighted we can't use GNMS
  • The lighted fields are used everyday of the week even when school is not in session.  Should the new school not have lights that would be a huge loss?  How would the soccer and football teams compete?  How would they coordinate schedules with other schools?  I think constructing a new building is fantastic, but the lights should be grandfathered back in.
  • Without lights, we would not be able to have football games in the evening.
  • Keep the football field and lights in good repair
  • Request lighting be restored.
  • Improved building and better planning with the school campus as a whole for the students and community
  • I have not seen a conceptual layout of the new school so I do not know how it will change.  I would assume that the school would handle capacity and stay on the leading edge of education in Virginia.
  • I would like to see better lighting for a friendlier atmosphere on the interior spaces.  Keep windows allowing natural light! The newer schools tend to minimize windows- our kids are getting an education not a prison sentence. The auditorium needs to be large enough to accommodate the school functions, plays, meetings. I think the grounds need to be maximized for open space for many sporting activities. This area is in desperate need of open lit areas for kids to play organized sports.
  • Lights are imperative to the Recreation League Football games and practices.
  • No lights on the field will prevent football practice.
  • We hope to be able to continue using the athletic fields and have cleaner school.
  • None really, especially if a decent stadium facility is rebuilt.
  • If the lights at the field were not put up them it would restrict practices and Friday night games.
  • Please keep the lighted fields. They are an invaluable resource to both the GN Athletic Assoc and the various middle schools that need to hold athletic events later in the evenings.
  • I believe GNMS should continue to serve the Great Neck community.  Many different organizations use many of the schools in Virginia Beach and they should continue to serve the community.
  • They should not change.   Stadium is still a must along w/ lights to allow nighttime games and practices.
  • none
  • Hopefully will have the athletic fields with the lights in the back.
  • I would hope improved facilities
  • I see the opportunity for the city to enhance the sports fields to be used in not only the school's activities but also city recreational leagues.  It would be prudent for the city to take advantage of this opportunity to have another state of the art sports arena and a new school.  The land is there, so why not make a great sports facility also.
  • None
  • Without lights I would be unable to exercise at the track which I am usually under the lights for my last half of exercising.  My boy’s sports activities will have to be earlier if there are not any lights, which is difficult since my husband and I work.
  • More after school activities.
  • Nothing, unless they do not put lights on the football field.
  • Improve athletic facilities
  • I would expect more use from the additional fields at the school.
  • Better accessibility to technology - more modern facilities
  • If no lights where would the GNMS student games and the recreation leagues sports practice at night?
  • Need to add lights to the field
  • Without lights the Recreation league teams would not be able to practice at night, GNMS sports would all have to end before dark as well.
  • I do not know who uses the school now, but I would hope that, when available, the school and fields could be used for Scouts, civic meetings, and city recreation league sports.
  • Obviously, without lights on the football field, there would be no sports at night
  • I would hope that there would not be any changes.
  • My biggest concern is that our community would lose the lighted fields resulting in a change in or, worse, the loss of the Great Neck Buckeye Football program. With talk of not having field lighting, we as a community are very worried our boys will lose the opportunity to participate in this worthwhile team sport.
  • We need to keep the lights and we need to have irrigation on those fields to keep them in good shape.
  • The Buckeye football practices and flag football games would not be able to be played because there wouldn't be any light to see to play.
  • Improved facilities, especially for night games, would provide a safe place for our children and the parents, grandparents etc... Who are spectators to meet and enjoy events there.
  • Would like to see it become the Math and Science Academy for middle school.
  • Unable to hold practices without lights because of early darkness in fall and early winter. Also for the younger kids, it is very exciting for the flag football teams to play under the lights like all of their brothers did.
  • Hope to be able to do the same activities
  • Better fields for sports for school use as well as community use
  • My son would no longer attend GNMS, but that is the only change I foresee in the next couple of years.
  • I would like to see Great Neck's fields continue to be available through parks and rec.  I would also like to see more community organizations using the new building facility.  I personally am excited about the schola, since I am the SCA sponsor and plan to use it for rep. meetings.
  • Hopefully would be able to still use the school for same purpose through the transition phase and new construction.
  • My son would not be able to practice at night without lighting.
  • If the new school's football field is not lighted, the Buckeyes (and other recreation league football teams) will not have a place to practice!
  • I hope that a design can be built that doesn’t promote dark areas at night for kids to get in trouble.  My wife was afraid to walk the track because the field is blocked from view by the stadium and tree line.
  • My vision is for the GNMS to be used by the local population the way it is today. Cox High School is all locked down so the people paying taxes and living near the school do not have access to any of those fields.  So GNMS is the only option.
  • The lack of lighting will make it impossible to have night games.
  • As my children get older, I will use it more.
  • Football - would like to see the lights to remain for the children.  They have so many ways to get in trouble without taking a recreation sport from them during these ""trouble"" hours of this critical age.
  • I hope it remains open access to local residents.
  • Please view the community holistically and place function over aesthetic. Schools should be focal points in our community and not points of division.
  • Hopefully, the school will still be available for football games.
  • Same or more sporting activities - recreation leagues etc
  • No
  • The facilities would not be available during construction.
  • I do not understand.
  • I would like to see schools used for more community activities outside of school hours
  • No lighted fields
  • Keep the lights on the fields, provide irrigation to keep the fields in good shape
  • No more night time practices or games with no lights and with football season, it gets dark by 6pm!
  • The program would be lost if lights are not installed
  • Not sure
  • Newer school/facilities would offer the opportunity for other area leagues to hold their events there. City events may be held at night on the field and it will give traveling teams an alternate place to utilize. When someone comes into your ""home"", don't you usually want to use your good china. This new school/facilities may be an opportunity for the city to ""show-off""
  • We must have lights to help our children have sports and recreation when parents are free of work obligations.
  • A new school will be great, however losing the lighted football field would severely impact the Great Neck Athletic Association in that the young men who participate in the program will not have a football field to practice or to play on.
  • I suspect that the additional field will increase the amount of use. This is a great means of the kids getting exercise and keeping out of trouble. Utilize an irrigation system with green run off practices supplying the water.
  • The inability to have the night practices and flag football games.
  • Hope to stay the same.

3. What are your concerns with GNMS?  Are there current issues the design team should be aware of?
  • I live in Meadowridge and no one in our family attends the school anymore.  Sometimes when sports activities are occurring at GNMS, the lights are bright and it is loud in my home.
  • As a resident of Meadowridge for almost 20 years, I have listened to noise at GNMS at night.  It is too noisy with bands/games at night.
  • Yes lights at Great Neck are imperative.
  • Major consideration is given to the lights.
  • Accommodate the demand for outdoor athletic facilities.  Security is key.
  • Overhead light system for late summer and early fall sports.
  • We need to keep the lights and irrigate the fields.
  • Don’t understand the economic advantage of taken down the lights when they accommodate a valuable worth while program that permits expanded athletic activities/exposure to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity.
  • Location and orientation of athletic fields adjacent to residential communities.  The softball field behind the new GNMS should have the outfield adjacent to the residential areas.  Home plate and backstop should be adjacent to the school building.  It would be a more appropriate location for bleachers and access, and would direct more of the activity, and thus noise, around home plate, away from the neighborhood.
  • Loss of use of lighted football field during construction and lost of lights on the new school fields.
  • Keep lights on – for good of all kids and not a few neighbors.
  • Concerns - When the new building will be completed and where these students will go to when the new school is under construction.  No current issues
  • Word was the football field was to be in the front after completed.   Flat roofs leak.  Stucco is trash.  Bricks, bricks, bricks.....
  • Age of school, safety and traffic.  Son tore his MCL at a school football practice and had a very hard time getting to his classes on crutches.
  • I would love to see GNMS remain a part of the community.
  • Lights are needed on the field.
  • Traffic access.
  • We need lights and irrigation.
  • Keep the lights.
  • During construction, and apparently after, there is no plan to maintain athletic facilities, particularly a lighted football/athletic field.
  • Please keep the lights. The practices and games could not continue without them
  • Irrigation.  There were many times that the field was not usable because of this.
  • My only concern is to have lights on the practice field and good irrigation.  Our children do not attend the school.  But my taxes pay for it.
  • It is very old and is in disrepair.  It needs to be replaced and the school itself needs to be larger so less portables will be needed.
  • Save the lights
  • I have not real with current design but question why the auditory rather than separate facilities for auditorium and cafeteria, won't this combined use because scheduling conflicts as I know lunch consumes much of the day?
  • Energy efficiency.
  • Keep the stadium and the lights!!
  • Very solid presentation last night.
  • Concerned about how GNM students will have P.E. and practice for sports with no fields available during construction.
  • Lighting and irrigation of fields.
  • We want to have lighted and irrigated fields included in the new design.
  • Football field need to have lights. Need to have the fields irrigated. Need to have bathrooms out side of the building.
  • There is a specific need for the lights on the field to be kept in the new design.  Many winter and Fall Sports are played here and would greatly effect the number of teams that could utilize this field.
  • Save the football field lights!!
  • It's nice having the field off the main road--I guess this will change with the new design.
  • Be sure the windows will open and air flow is sufficient for 1300 students + staff so it won't be a sick school.
  • My son currently attends classes in the stadium (on the Penguin Team).  We would like to see enough space in the school to accommodate all of the students without having to use portables or remote class rooms.
  • If the school does not have outdoor lighting, then my children will no longer be able to play flag football or Buckeye football.
  • No
  • No known except upgrading the sports lights.
  • Lights are needed.
  • NO.
  • Irrigation should be included in the new field design as well as lighting.
  • I am very concerned about the possibility of losing the lights of the football field.  The GNMS fields have been a center of Buckeye football since inception.  The lack of lights at GNMS would seriously jeopardize the ability of this valuable Great Neck neighborhood program to continue to provide a healthy outlet for physical activity for our kids.
  • A current issue would be if the lights were to be eliminated in the new plan.  This would affect not only regular school events, but also community events as well.
  • Survey some teachers who will really use the space before you start.  Make sense things like drops and electrical are reasonable.  Network drop behind a built in cabinet or in a doorway for example.    Integrated telephone and wireless.  Provide secure wireless for school pc's provide a secondary wireless with unique setup for teacher and guest pc's.
  • My concerns are that without a lighted field at Great Neck, a nightmare situation will occur.  Adequate space for these football teams that have practiced at GNMS will not be available as other sports have already established there areas to practice.
  • It would be VERY disappointing if the fields were not lit.  I believe it allows better events and more attendance if sporting events are in the evenings when more people, who work, are able to attend.  The additional support is good for developing the community.
  • Yes, the lights on the field could possibly go away.  Offering activities for children is one way to keep them physically fit and it also offers a somewhat opportunity to foster diversity in the community.
  • My concern is that the amenities that have been offered at that school since its inception as Cox High School, would not be replaced.  I'm particularly concerned with the ""lights"" on the football field.  As one of the only Middle Schools to have lights, it is a blessing to the Community.  I know the lighted fields are used by many throughout the year, both Community and School.  In fact once we start losing daylight in October, I know they schedule several Middle School Games at GNMS to take advantage of the lights.  Two yeas ago my sons team Lynnhaven Middle played a game at GNMS even though they weren't playing GNMS.  Additionally, as previously mentioned, the use of the lighted field is a critical component of the Buckeye Football Program.
  • Do not take down lights or at least replace them.
  • Wanting to keep the fields lighted for Sports activities.
  • As the owner of a neighboring property (1816 Foxhound Lane), I have several concerns...  1.  Storm Drainage much of the GNMS site drains to an open ditch in the existing ball field behind the school, before running onto my property and on downstream.  The existing ditch is already receiving flows that are causing erosion on my property and on the GNMS site.  Virginia Erosion and Sediment Control Regulations require that runoff leaving a development site shall be discharged into an adequate channel.  An adequate channel is defined as a channel that will convey runoff without causing erosion.  The existing channel is inadequate.  One solution might be to provide riprap at the ends of the pipes in the drainage ditch.    At the January 15 meeting, the design team presented three different site plans for the property.  None of the layouts presented included any storm water management plans.  Yet storm water management should be an integral component of site planning.  I would like the design team to be fully aware of the existing erosion problem, and to incorporate their proposed storm water management plans into the plans that are presented to the public.  If storm water management is considered at an early stage in the development process, many more creative and effective ideas can be developed to solve the existing erosion problem and prevent new problems as well.  If storm water management is only an afterthought to the site planning process, the designer may be left with fewer and more expensive options.  2.  Bicycle Racks -There is an existing pedestrian and bicycle path on the west side of my property that is a popular route for student cyclists to take to GNMS.  Unfortunately, the children leave their bicycles locked to trees and dropped in the shrubbery on my property.  Apparently there is no convenient place at GNMS for the children to properly park and secure their bicycles.  Can the design team include a bicycle rack that is attractive and convenient for the students to use?  Perhaps a canopy that would protect their bicycles from rain might make the rack more attractive than the trees along the path.  It would be better for cyclists and pedestrians if the abrupt grade changes from the woods down to GNMS were more gradual; thereby encouraging the children to ride all the way onto school property.  3.  Screening- At least one of the plans proposes the new building much closer to Green Hill Farms than the existing building.  Will there be any landscape plantings to provide screening between Green Hill Farms and GNMS?
  • No concerns
  • Need to keep the lights on the field and fix the irrigation system for the fields
  • Have you thought of planting shrubs in the back near the park to hide the view?
  • We would like lights and irrigation on the football field.
  • Need to keep the lights on the football field.
  • Need to keep the lights on the football field.
  • We need outside bathrooms
  • We need to keep the lights and water the athletic fields
  • need to keep the lights and water the athletic fields
  • My concerns are the lighted fields that have been provided to this community since the early 60's. I think the school should be built further towards the back and the fields up front in order to accommodate some of the drainage issues.
  • An irrigation system for the grass fields would be most beneficial.
  • LIGHTS ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD AND WATER FOR THE FIELDS
  • Need lights on football field and outside bathrooms. need to be able to water the fields
  • lights for sports should be included
  • There should be lights at the fields
  • None.
  • It is my understanding that lights are currently not incorporated with the design.  The lights need to be saved.
  • I want to make sure that all Sports facilities are kept and improved.  Many people in our area use these facilities and they are very important for our children's future.
  • YES - please let the community continue to play our flag football games there with lighting.  It's so important because of the time change that takes place in the fall.
  • Traffic flow - please make it as safe as possible for the students, as well as traffic passing by and the surrounding neighborhoods. Safety is also an issue with having the field at the front of the property.
  • None--but please keep the lights!!
  • The lights for the football field and track
  • Would like lights for field to be included in design.
  • Proposed designs of the new school look great...I especially like the safety features...
  • Student safety
  • Need to keep open space and lights.
  • concern that fields will not be lighted, needed for baseball, football games
  • Loosing the use of the Football fields and the lights for practice and games.
  • The rebuild needs to have the new sports fields is sync with all community needs.  That means lights and irrigation on the playing fields and restrooms.
  • The construction during the school year and the effects on the children while attending school
  • SAVE THE LIGHTS at Great Neck Middle!
  • As stated above the delegation of the lights would create a huge negative impact on the community.
  • no lights for games
  • main issue is the plans do not include lights
  • No concerns with status quo
  • Insufficient parking adjacent to the gymnasium where many events take place.  Locker size currently too small for their book bags, athletic gear, daily lunch, and coats.
  • needs lots of updating
  • Please do not eliminate the athletic field lights GN football especially makes great use of the lighted field.
  • I feel the lights are a necessary part of the community with so many teams counting on the lighting for evening practices especially with darkness falling earlier in the fall.
  • That the athletic field lights will be removed!
  • We need the lights to be a part of the new GNMS.
  • My son played with the Great Neck Buckeye football program for the past three years. Many of the practices and games were under the lights on the football field.
  • Concern that the field is in the front of the school--what type of barrier will be in place.  In addition, with the field in the front of the school, it is important that the landscape be maintained in a way that is fitting to the community--the city and civic leagues do a nice job maintaining Great Neck Road--don't want VBCPS to put up an eye sore.
  • GNMS is more than just a school. It's a place tax payers can use for other uses also. Please remember it is owed by the tax payers.
  • The parking is an issue and I'm not sure that putting the building in the back of the site is the best location. The current use of portables and the stadium classrooms are a problem now, so the new school needs to accommodate the growth.
  • Lights need to stay for our evening football games.
  • no concerns
  • Request lighting be restored.
  • keep the lights
  • The baseball fields should not have foul balls and/or home runs going onto Great Neck Road (this is not currently a problem).
  • I would love for there to be a proposal for a science acad. to be included here- it’s a great opportunity.
  • My concerns for GNMS are that it won’t have the amenities that we already have to include the stadium. I am not concerned with the neighborhood. Those people bought homes knowing they backed up to several schools. I don’t want the community as a whole to suffer from the few who already chose to back up to the school. The needs of the community are the most important issues at hand. After all this is a transient area and we want to offer the best to our kids!
  • We NEED the lights.  An area for the children to congregate in plain view might be nice.
  • Keep the lights
  • I think it should have all the modern amenities you would expect of any forward looking school as regards labs, computers, space, multimedia, and sports.  I would hope the gym would be multiuse with enough room for a decent number of spectators.  I would hope the football/ soccer / track facility would have locker rooms, stands, lights, and be something to be proud of as opposed to just a field.
  • Yes, I felt at the meeting we could not express our concerns because it was only preliminary designs.  I have a concern about the soccer and baseball fields being so close to Great Neck Rd. I also have a great concern about the construction traffic
  • There should be a girl's softball field at the new GNM. That way the elementary school kids can have their field back during the spring season.
  • My children benefit from the use of the fields and are not students at the school.
  • I have no real concerns.  Of the three designs shown at the January 15 meeting I preferred the first design, with different entries to various parts of GNMS.
  • Not having lights on sports fields
  • The new GNMS needs to have an air filtration system design that eliminates allergens.  The old GNMS has major problems in this area with allergens and mold!! The children who have allergies have serious allergy/asthma attacks and that leads to further illnesses that require antibiotics and missing time from school.
  • I am very concerned with the new GNMS not having lights on the football field.
  • I have not seen the school building design, but parking and student drop off for both GNMS and JBD need to be enhanced.
  • No lights will affect many families, many that do not even attend GNMS.
  • How will the construction (noise level) affect the students?  The safety of the kids during construction.  Also bigger lockers so that the kids can fit their book bags and coats easily.
  • No
  • Would want hard wood basketball floor vs. tile.
  • The team should HIGHLY consider keeping the lights at the football field.  The community has used the lights for over 30 years and is a mainstay for the community and the Great Neck Athletic Association to participate in football.
  • Access into and out at peak times other than school hours.
  • Impact of construction of the new facilities on the learning environment of the children that still need to go to school there.
  • We need the lights for all evening events and for security, otherwise a great place for teens to drink and use drugs etc!!!
  • Need Lights
  • The athletic fields should have lights
  • I am concerned about the noise and disruption to the students during construction.  Also I do not like using portables for classrooms.  My student is very athletic so the tearing up of the athletic fields during construction is a concern too.
  • I think that it is important to the community that the lights continue to be part of the field.  This field and the lights have served many G.N. families for years and I feel that it would be important to continue this.
  • Aside from not having field lights, no.
  • We need irrigation system to keep fields in good shape and keeping the area available for recreational and school sports.  We are blessed to have plenty of property for a mix of sports.
  • They need a bathroom available near the field for after-school activities.
  • We need to keep a lighted football field for the community.
  • That there may not be lights at the football field at the new middle school.
  • letting a small part of a neighborhood behind GNMS try and dictate how the new school will be designed
  • I have been told that the new school would not have a lighting system.  Our son uses the field in the evenings for football practice.
  • The lights on the football field are essential to the GNAA.  When the days get shorter the only way the kids can practice is under the lights.
  • There is not a definite provision for lights on any stadium planned with the new school.  Lights should be incorporated into the stadium for continued use of night time activities.
  • Maintaining the fields as far as drainage, fertiliization, etc is key to the safety of our athletes.
  • No Lights for Kids Practice
  • The field needs to be lighted and irrigated.
  • No, anything newer that what we've got now will be an improvement!
  • THE FIELD NEEDS IRRIGATION
  • Safety first and foremost. The current uses of GNMS should not have to be altered with the new design. I think that playing fields on Great Neck Road is a mistake. The parking lots and circular drive should be closest to Great Neck Road.
  • none
  • The lighting is very important.  During the later part of the football season it is dark after 6pm and the lights are needed
  • Lighting the field for recreational uses
  • Don't take the lights!!!!!
  • Parking is rough when events and functions are going on.
  • Safety throughout the construction period (both during school and esp. after hours), impact on students and community during the transition.
  • Continuing to keep lights at the GN Football Field.
  • We hope the stadium is preserved for sports events, with lights for night games.
  • It would be nice if all the classes are in the one building. My son had classes in the stadium and that was a drag in inclement weather.
  • It is important for the football field to have lights if possible.
  • We want lighted fields with an irrigation system to keep the fields in good shape.
  • Yes do not turn off the lights to the football field because it is used by the community
  • The loss of the stadium would be a huge negative of any new design.  The locker rooms and seating at the GNMS stadium encourage more family participation in school and recreational sporting events
  • fall sports with darkness falling early
  • keep lights on fields---many different sports teams use the fields at night
  • We need lighted fields so our 100s of kids have somewhere to practice and play games.  We need irrigation systems to keep the fields in good condition.
  • lights are needed to continue night time sports programs
  • lights need to be on the football field
  • I haven't seen the designs but the bus loop area could use some work. There is a lot of land in that area. Heritage Elementary has a great design. The kids don't need to leave the sidewalk until they are in front of their bus.
  • Keep the lights for sports and recreation.
  • Yes.  The lights on the football field should be included in the new design of the school.
  • I respectfully request that you keep the lights! The new Marco lights and timer should allow a compromise. I know the architect would object however, I wouldn't mind seeing a 6'high chain link fence along Great Neck Road with the field and lights located there.
  • That there would be no lights.
  • Retain existing lighting for the stadium and practice fields.
  • Keep the lights! Can you change when the sun goes down? No, so keep the field open for all of the kids and sports please.
  • Baseball field in front of school near the road. Foul balls going onto Great Neck Rd. causing problems.

4. What are your concerns relative to traffic at GNMS?
  • A traffic light may be helpful
  • There needs to be a traffic light at GNMS.  Traffic is too heavy and too fast.
  • A light would allow more safety for walkers to the Wimbledon Neighborhood.
  • Adequate parking for activities.
  • Both GNMS and LMS are a trouble parking during activity functions.
  • Entry and exit from Great Neck Rd is critical.  Today it is a very dangerous “intersection”.
  • Need better merging lanes for exiting traffic southbound.
  • It is a problem and perhaps traffic lights during school hours would be appropriate.
  • Especially congestion if Indigo Dunes goes through.
  • None
  • None
  • Scheme 3 provided at the GNMS meeting shows only one ingress/egress.  I think this would be a mistake to reduce the ingress/egress from the current two to one.  The other two schemes maintained two locations.  Scheme 2 seemed to make the most sense because it all addressed dual faculty parking locations.
  • Many; between GNMS and Dey congestion sometimes unbearable.  Crossing guard a necessity.
  • There should be a light to make the turn into the parking lot and to slow the traffic on Great Neck Road.
  • It is difficult to cross from the parking lot to Great Neck road.  A traffic light may be a good answer.
  • It is dangerous getting in and out of there on the morning and afternoon.  There should be a light between the schools
  • Study should be given to a traffic light at GNM or JBD.
  • None.
  • None at practice and game times
  • N/A
  • I think that traffic is handled great at the moment with both JBD and GNMS
  • None
  • Traffic should be routed away from the current entrance/exit next to the elementary school.
  • maintain a traffic cop during incoming and outgoing hours
  • No concerns
  • The traffic flow for both GNMS and JBD is currently very challenging and appears to be unsafe for pedestrians.
  • None!!
  • Do the best you can
  • none
  • None
  • None
  • It is really herd to get in and out of the parking lot. We need a traffic light at peak times
  • Traffic does not seem to be a problem due to the staging of events at this location
  • NONE
  • they most definitely need a traffic light--it's a nightmare getting in and out of there
  • traffic - JBD and GNMS - keep MS parking to the south side so JBD & GNMS buses can share the middle entrance CHANGE the parent pick up/ drop off for JBD to front and BUSES on the SIDE DEFINITE NEED for a signal for use for BOTH schools
  • There should be safe drop off and pick up areas for students and parents.
  • I do not like when people leave the school and when turning left, go to the middle of the road and wait until they can go. Scares me.
  • none
  • Just the layout of the driveway and parking lot.  Maybe a traffic light to help the crossing guards and traffic flow after events (school related or sport related)
  • IT IS A LITTLE DIFFICULT ENTERING GREATNECK ROAD WHEN SPORTING EVENTS FINISH, BUT I DONT THINK IT IS ANY MORE DIFFICULT THAN OTHER LOCATIONS.
  • the corridor is busy...the school would have very little effect on traffic
  • none
  • No.  Great Neck Road is a very busy road now, and a new school would not affect this.
  • a stop light to handle J.B.Dey and great neck traffic would be helpful
  • As of now the parking lot to the left of the school needs to be addressed.  It is difficult to figure out flow patterns and hard to get out after a game ends.
  • Making the left on Great Neck road can be a bite of an issue after an event.  It is a bite of a blind turn, especially when there is heavy traffic turning in and out of the parking lot.
  • No concerns regarding traffic.
  • not easy to make a left turn out of the parking lot on to Great Neck road during peak times.
  • I don't have any concerns with traffic at GNMS.
  • Not a problem.
  • Traffic is manageable, most of the time.
  • On peak drop off and pick up times the traffic is horrible
  • A light at the entrance to the visitor parking lot would be great.
  • traffic is a bear at peak drop off and pick up times
  • Traffic is horrible at peak drop off and peak pick up times.
  • it is horrible at peak drop off and pick up times
  • Bad at peak times
  • it is bad at peak times
  • The traffic is already horrific around GNMS. If a traffic light had to be installed I would propose that the lights only function during the times of the morning and afternoon that buses are trying to get the kids to school.
  • Traffic is tolerable.
  • NEED A TRAFFIC LIGHT
  • need a traffic light
  • With 2 schools so close together it creates a bit of a traffic jam
  • None.
  • The current traffic flow can become congested during sports events.  It would be good if there could be more of a one way continuous flow to keep traffic moving.
  • As with any school we should always ensure that the traffic is handled with Student Safety as the main priority.
  • none
  • Walking zone, particularly students crossing from Wimbledon on the Bay.
  • They need a light getting out of there!!!
  • parking is not easy
  • No concerns with traffic - believe it would remain the same.
  • Should be worked out with a traffic light at GNMS GN and Wimbleton...
  • None.
  • no traffic concern, maintain turn lane
  • We need to make sure we have safe access in and out.
  • None.
  • no concerns
  • N/A
  • The current traffic patterns create no problems.
  • none
  • Have never experienced a big traffic problem at GNMS - travel there during school hours and at other times.  Delays associated with the opening and closing of school (buses, traffic control) are not any worse than they are at other schools
  • Exit onto North Great Neck is quite difficult.
  • think there should be a traffic light
  • A traffic light that operates at high traffic times between JBD and GNM should be considered.
  • No concerns
  • None
  • Parking lot needs to be redone, perhaps a traffic light installed.
  • Right now drop of & pick up is bad at both schools.
  • None
  • None--it shouldn't change.
  • Schools should not be built on busy main roads. I guess it's a little late for that.
  • My child walks to school.  There needs to be good access and walking areas to the building if it is situated in the back of the site.  There needs to be spacious sidewalks for the children walking so the car traffic will not be dangerous.  I like the current design of the bus lane being separate and the student drop off in the front.
  • no concerns
  • n/a
  • traffic is an issues during the start and release of school only
  • Traffic flow could be improved, but all in all it seems alright.
  • a stop light would be helpful
  • My concerns are the designs for car drop-off and pick up as well as buses. Will it negatively impact traffic on Great Neck Road? Currently there is no back ups on the flow of traffic unless the traffic officer stops the flow. Also, the traffic flow for John B Dey is not impacted. Currently the side lot of GNMS is used to keep traffic off Great neck for JBD.
  • John B Dey has more of a traffic issue.
  • They could use a stop light at the exit.
  • The loop at the front of the school gets backed up very quickly.
  • None- as long as the parking allotment is the same as now or slightly larger, it's not a problem.
  • Construction traffic
  • None. probably no different from other schools
  • It could use a traffic light.
  • A traffic light is as always at the discretion of the city.  A light may make it easier to leave both John B. Dey and GNMS.  It may also slow traffic on Great Neck road.
  • There needs to be a separate loop area for parent pickup that does not block the bus lane and allows for a better flow of traffic.
  • None
  • I have none.
  • Traffic is terrible when dropping off a student or picking them up, especially if you have to head south bound on Great Neck Rd.
  • I have never had an issue.
  • Improve the flow of the side parking lot and the parent drop off area.
  • Just make sure that there is a patrol out in front of the school at the right times.
  • no
  • It's tough getting in and out during the beginning and end of school and parking is very limited during athletic events.
  • See #3
  • It's a very busy area with JBD next door during student drop off and pick up for both schools as well as when there are special events going on.  Having someone to direct traffic at those times is VERY helpful
  • there needs to be a light on the corner of Great Neck middle and John B. Dey ,to effectively move traffic in and out of school, during all activities
  • None - traffic would be essentially the same with lights -
  • It would be great if somehow a student drop off system for GNMS and neighboring J.B. Dey could be engineered.
  • current traffic patterns and routes are too congested and hard to navigate
  • Is there enough parking?
  • Traffic conditions at the intersection of the school parking lot and Great Neck is horrendous and dangerous.  A new scheme to allow the flow to move more effectively is important.  Lights should be installed on Great Neck rd to allow traffic to depart from all school entrances in the mornings and afternoons, as well as the evenings.
  • When the buses park there during the summer it creates a lot of problems getting in and out of the parking lot.
  • There have never been any traffic issues that I have been aware of.  There has always been plenty available parking near the fields.
  • Thru traffic on Great Neck Road from Shore drive to Va. Beach Blvd. has increased dramatically in the past 5 years my concerns relative to GNMS are the same as those for JBD and Cox.  The traffic is terrible

  • None
  • Exiting left is a bit tricky but, everyone seems to be alert and careful.  Have not witnessed any accidents.
  • None.
  • Dividing or separating the J.B. Dey and GNMS traffic flows would be much safer for the children.  A light at the intersection of Wimbledon and Great Neck would also provide for a safer walking zone for our students.
  • Hope workers will keep traffic to a minimum during times when kids are entering and leaving school in AM and afternoon.
  • The parking lot gets congested.
  • Something needs to be done about the GNMS and JBD traffic flow in the mornings
  • NONE
  • Yes!
  • Great Neck Road during rush hour is very congested and getting worse- with Indigo Dunes coming. I think that the crossing guard does a pretty good job during John B. Dey and GNMS start times.

  • The police seem to have it all under control and I drive past there twice a day to and from work.
  • Great Neck Road is a busy street, so hopefully pick up/drop off areas for parents/students will be set back from Great Neck Road.
  • It's tough, but only for a short amount of time.  There should be a better 'drop off' for the kids in the a.m. - Similar to Cox H.S. drop off.
  • Traffic is difficult today with two entrances. Discussed at the past meeting was desire to constrict to a single ""primary"" entrance (with light).  Light is good--single entrance seems self limiting.
  • None
  • No particular concerns
  • Having the crossing guard is affective before and after school, but other times it can be a mess.
  • Fix parking lot, more spaces if possible
  • there should be a light because it is hard to make a left turn from the school
  • Traffic at the intersection with JBDES.  Right now it's tolerable but can be dangerous exiting in the morning.
  • too fast on great neck road; 45mph posted equals 65 mph driven
  • I think traffic patterns at the school now are fine as is.  I never see a backup in the mornings and the gym circle is very effective for sporting events.

  • Traffic is a problem.  I would recommend a stoplight at the entrance to GNMS/ John B. Dey.
  • Other than during school zone hours, I know of no traffic headaches in that area and I've been here 12 years. The only thing I don't like is that there is 1 school zone for 2 schools that start at different times so it is just an extended ""zone"" that is a bit long. Although when it comes to our children's safety, this is just more of an inconvenience than a problem
  • traffic could be improved
  • The parking lot should be redesigned.  Sometimes there is a backup of cars when sporting events are held.
  • No problems here utilize the experts and install a timed traffic light if necessary.
  • There are none.
  • A Traffic would work when needed but not all the time
  • Always been there. Always will be!!!!

5. Do you prefer for the football field to be lighted or not lighted?  If lighted what time would you recommend lights be turned off?
  • They should be turned off by 10:00p.m. at the latest.  I do not live where the lights bother me, but friends who live near the football field, my neighbors, do not like the lights in their backyards.  In that case I would prefer no lights.
  • Not lighted
  • Lights at Great Neck are imperative!  5:30-8:00p.m. on weeknights and 5:30 -9:00p.m. during fall on Friday for Flag Football games.
  • Lighted.  9:00p.m. Monday thru Thursday.  Flag football goes to 10p.m. because of games from 5p.m. on.
  • Lighted.  Lights off at 10p.m.  I would also recommend lights on the other fields.
  • Yes – 9:00p.m.
  • Per my earlier comments.  The lights should be available; perhaps until about 8:00p.m. but that is a schedule that could be coordinated according to needs.
  • Absolutely NOT lighted.  The school-associated recreational actives can all be accommodated without lighted fields.  If area-wide recreation leagues want lighted fields, the city should provide them at their regional recreational facilities.  That is why they were built.  Schools are for school-related activities only, and recreational facilities are for non-school-related activities.
  • Lighted and turned off at 9:30p.m.
  • Lights don’t affect my home in Meadow Ridge.
  • Lighted off by 9p.m. my home is very much affected by lights and ball games but I support 100%.
  • Lighted because the football players and coaches need to see what they're doing.
  • Lighted.  Turn them off at 9:00 p.m.  It is a great resource and my kids have benefit both academically and physical from its availability.
  • Lighted.   It would be great to have a dual system for lights.  A master system that turns off the lights automatically at a given time (maybe 11pm).  But another system that allows a coach to turn on/off the lights prior to the master deadline.  This would not only save energy, but would allow a coach to turn off the lights when the field is no longer in use, maybe as early as 8pm or 9pm.
  • Definitely lighted; my children have benefited for the last 15yrs from the lights and hope they will continue to do so. Been part of not only Buckeyes but other sports that benefit from lights.  My 18yr daughter is at college playing sports and is due to being able to utilize field.  9pm weekdays, 10pm weekends.
  • Lighted, 11:00
  • I would love to see the football field lighted each night until 10:00 pm.
  • lighted - after 9:00PM
  • Prefer lighting that could be turned off at around 8:30pm
  • Lighted, off at 9.  If the stadium is moved closer to the street, lights shouldn't disturb the people in Meadowridge.  I live there also and the lights have never bothered my family.
  • Lighted...turned off when not in use, turned on when in use....midnight curfew
  • I would prefer that the field be lighted. The lights should be out no latter than 10:00 pm
  • lighted 8:30 PM
  • I prefer the fields lighted.  9PM
  • Lighted.  10:00 PM
  • Lighted until 9:00pm
  • DEFINATELY lighted. The lights shouldn't be turned off until at the very earliest, 8:30.  That gives the children an opportunity to conduct practices.
  • LIGHTED definitely. Turned off at 9:30pm??
  • Lighted!!!!  Lights out by 9:00 p.m.
  • Yes, this field needs to be lighted.  I would recommend turning the lights off at 10 pm.
  • Lighted...9:00 pm during fall season.
  • Lighted turned off by 10p.m.
  • I prefer the football field to be lighted and the lights turned off at 10pm
  • Lighted, 10:00
  • Please continue to light the field.  The track is an important asset to the community and allows us all to stay physically active - even when daylight saving time kicks in.
  • YES!! 11:00 PM
  • Yes Lighted, the lights should go off when the last team leaves
  • Fields need to be lighted for the sports programs such as football.  Over the past 12 years the Great Neck Athletic Association has depended on having a lit football field at GNMS.    The Great Neck Athletic Association Flag Football Program and the Great Neck Buckeye Football Program serves over 400 six-fourteen year-old children in GN area each year. This program needs to be in the forefront of decision making for the site layout and lighting issues of the school.
  • Lighted - based on practice schedules
  • lighted- the lights should be turned off at 10:00 pm
  • Lighted and maybe around 11:00pm
  • Lighted and irrigated.  I see no reason to have the lights on past 10pm.
  • Yes lighted. 9pm the lights should go off
  • Lighted  9:30 PM
  • Lighted; By 9:00 p.m.
  • Lighted.  Turned off by 9 on school nights, 10 on weekends.
  • LIGHTED  10pm
  • Yes, Lighted.  Maybe turned off at 9 p.m.
  • I think it would be devastating to lose the lights!! It is what makes that field so special! There wouldn't be any places to practice since it gets dark so soon. It is the best thing about GNMS! Between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. I think would be a reasonable time to turn off the lights.
  • LIGHTED Yes!  10:00 or 10:30 PM should be late enough for Rec. football games to be over.
  • Lighted!
  • YES, lights are very important.  They can be turned off at 8:30/9:00 during football season.  If there is no use for the lights at other times of the year, then they can be turned off earlier.
  • We definitely want to see the lights remain at GNMS.   Our family has enjoyed school events, community events and children's sports programs at GNMS for several years and would hate to have that end!
  • Definitely lighted! I feel 9:00pm would be a good turn off time
  • We need lights especially during the daylight savings time. Our children need places to play and we need this field for Buckeye Football. It is a wonderful program that would not exist without the lights on the football field.
  • Prefer football field to be lighted. Football is a great way to teach our boys hard work, commitment and yes, even self control and respect for authority. for some kids buckeye football is the only chance they'll have to play real football and for some kids this program is the only chance they'll have in learning to respect authority
  • I prefer lit games.  Lights turned off at approximately 9 pm. should cover all events.
  • lighted 9:00
  • YES. PLEASE ADD THE LIGHTS. LIGHTS SHOULD BE ON UNTIL 9PM.
  • Yes for lighting...I would use common sense...when in use keep it lit...when not in use keep the lights off.
  • As discussed in #3 above, strongly prefer the football field to be lighted.  11 pm would be a reasonable time (or earlier whenever the particular activity for the evening was finished.
  • Yes, lighted. 10:00 pm turn off time.
  • I would prefer the lights!!!!  The light should be turned off no later than 10:00 p.m.  The last game for flag or Buckeyes should be at 8:30 at the latest, and this would then allow the lights to be turned off by 10:00.
  • We need lights on the field to hold evening practices.  There are 25 coaches who devote their time after work to this program which serves around 150 young men from our area.  The level of coaching quality is incredible.  I believe it will falter if practices have to be held earlier; many coaches including myself will not be able to get off work in time to hold daylight practices.  I'm sure the goal is not to negatively affect current successful programs.  The football coaches and parents will value your re-consideration of the importance of this issue.  The lights can be turned off by 8:15  Cordially,  Skip Dowd Great Neck Buckeyes Football Coach and Parent
  • Lighted. Programmable lights could be programmed in advance by leagues.  Assign different access code passwords so that each access is tied to unique groups...  recreation leagues, football vs. baseball etc.
  • The fields should very much be lighted.  I think 9pm would be a reasonable time to turn them off.
  • I feel that the fields should be lit at least until 9pm.  I also feel that the fields should be used for additional sporting events besides football during the evening hours.
  • Yes, lighted.  Lights to remain on until 9pm or later if sports play requires (Friday night kids football games)
  • Lighted, from dusk to 9:30 p.m.
  • I would prefer lighted fields so that other sports could be played there after hours.  Lights should be out by 9:30
  • As previously mentioned, I strongly prefer the Football field to be lighted.  I would propose that the lights be on a timer set to be turned off at 9:00 pm on weeknights w/ exception of Friday (9:30 pm).
  • I want the lights for my 3 kids all under the age of 7 to enjoy for recreational football.  See no reason that they are not turned off by 10:00 at night.
  • Lighted.  Lights off by 9:30 p.m.
  • LIGHTS! Please don't take football away from our children.
  • Prefer no lights.  If lighted would prefer that lights be off by 8:30 pm.
  • Lighted.  9:00 pm
  • Yes Lighted  8:30 Monday - Thursday 9:00 on Friday We do not need lights on Saturday or Sunday
  • I didn't think the original plans had a football field in the same spot. I thought I would be looking at the back of the school w/ the cafeteria left of the drop-off.  Sometimes the lights are on till 11pm and I think if the field is in the front, there will be less chance of vandalism.
  • Definitely Lighted!! Turn off time - 10:pm
  • We would prefer the field to be lighted and the lights should be turned off by 9:00PM unless there is a play-off or championship game.  For the teams at GNMS and the Buckeye football program.
  • yes we want lights on until 9pm
  • Yes, we want lights till 9:00 p.m.
  • Lights and they should be on till 8:30
  • Lights and they should go off at 8:30 Monday -Thursday, 9:30 on Friday and should not be used on Saturday or Sunday Night
  • Yes, the field should be lighted and they should go off at 9:00pm
  • YES! LIGHTED! I think 9:00PM would be a sufficient cutoff time.
  • Yes, it is absolutely paramount that the football field be lighted.  Between school schedule hours, other academic activities, and daylight hours, the lights are necessary for the kids to keep up on sports. Lights should go out at 9:30pm.
  • LIGHTS  8:30 MONDAY-THURSDAY 9:30 FRIDAY NIGHTS DON'T KNOW IF THEY NEED TO BE ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
  • lighted, on till 9:30 at night
  • LIGHTED 11pm
  • They should be lit.....I think if they went off at 8 PM it would be acceptable to all
  • Lighted. I would think all play would be concluded by 10:00 p.m. and people would have 30 minutes to vacate before the lights went off.
  • Definitely lighted.  We need to save the lights.  Lights should be left on during sports use practice without restrictions.
  • The football field needs to be lighted.  The lights should only be used when there is a game (school or Little League, etc) or event scheduled.  I would think that 11PM should be the cut-off.
  • PLEASE LIGHTED - TURNED OFF AT 10:00 PM (AT THE LATEST)
  • Yes, lighted, as it can benefit the community more with football events, and possibly other events.  Lights should be off by 9:30 so traffic is dispersed by 10, hopefully.
  • Lighted please!  9:00PM!!
  • Yes we prefer the lights. Turn off time by 8:30
  • Lighted.  Off at 8:30
  • yes, lighted and should probably be turned off by 9pm
  • Please please...keep the lights.  We can work with neighboring neighborhoods to turn lights on and off at reasonable hours.  The lights have been up and have been used by Virginia Beach children for years.  I look at taking down the lights as doing away with athletic curriculum; our kids need the lighted fields in order to practice.  I would hate to see Virginia Beach lose another venue for kids to play.  In a recent article about the best places for kids to be raised in America VAB was list as one of the best largely b/c of the availability of athletic fields.  Let’s not lose this one.....
  • Lighted Approx. 10:00 p.m.
  • YES to the lights! Otherwise there isn't enough time for all the teams to practice and play. Turn them off at 9:15 (which means events end at 9 and there's 15 minutes to get to the car!).
  • Lighted.  10P
  • Lighted!!!!!  I am one of the people this really has a bearing on because I am one of the houses that sees the lights, and I'm still for it because of the greater good for the community.  Time to turn off should be use and safety dependent.
  • Recommend football field be lighted.  Recommend lights be turned off at or around 8pm
  • Lighted with lights turned out between 9:00-10:00.
  • If we are to continue to promote Virginia Beach, and especially the Great Neck corridor, as a world class family oriented community, we need to ensure we continue have the facilities to match.  Let's not step backwards in capability, but match what we have now and look to further enhance our community capabilities.  Light and irrigate the field, it is an absolute must.
  • lighted 9 or 10 pm
  • DEFINITELY LIGHTED - YES!!  Time - maybe 9:00
  • SAVE THE LIGHTS at Great Neck Middle!
  • Prefer the lights is an understatement! I would have expected that the lights be included in the original design plan.  The GNMS design should be creative and innovative in it's planning while incorporating those features (LIGHTS) which have provided a positive constant to the community.  Why fix something which is not broken?
  • lighted - after games 9:45
  • I want them lighted. I do not have an issue with the lights going off at a certain time
  • The football field should definitely be lighted to allow for after school uses in the fall/winter.  Removing the lights on a field that is particularly used for sports in the fall when sundown comes earlier seems counterintuitive.  Lights should be turned off when the field is not in use.  The lights should be no more bothersome to the adjacent neighborhood than the noise coming off of the field.  The school and lights were there when the houses were purchased so the residents knew what they were getting in to - they should be good neighbors and support the uses needed by the school.
  • Lighted - Turn off NLT 10:00 PM
  • I want the lights to remain for future use. Start at 5 end at 9:30
  • Lighted. They certainly do not need to be on any later than 10 pm.
  • YES PLEASE!!  In all fairness, 9:00 pm should get all teams finished with practices & off the fields.
  • LIGHTED!!!!!!!  Turned on at dusk and off by 10:00.
  • Fields should be lighted. I would recommend that they be turned off by 9:00pm.
  • Should be lighted. Neighborhoods were built after the school was built. 9pm.
  • Lighted lights should be turned off at 9:00 pm
  • Prefer the field to be lighted--provides more opportunity for the school and the community to utilize the fields.  However, it is recommended that the field be irrigated to maintain the landscape and the fields.  Lights should be off at the same time as the high school--10:30 or 10.
  • LIGHTED- 10:00 P.M.
  • I definitely think the fields need to be lighted.  GNM provides uses to more than just the school activates, such as the Buckeye football program.  I think 9:30pm is a reasonable time for the lights to go off.  We also need lights for the tennis courts.
  • LIGHTED!!!!!!!  9 p.m. on school nights and 10 p.m. on weekends.
  • lighted and turned off at 9:30P
  • Lighted 9:00 pm
  • lighted 10:00pm is reasonable
  • The football field should be lit.  The baseball field should be lit as well.  The lights should turn off by 10:00 on school nights and 11:00 on weekends.
  • Please save the lights, it gets dark so early and the kids need them to see.
  • I think the football field SHOULD be lighted, it is absolutely necessary to have some lighted fields that may be utilized by local soccer, football, and local school activities. Lights could be turned off at 9pm.
  • Lighted. 9:15 to accommodate people leaving the field after games.
  • Lighted  9:00 PM
  • Lighted...turned off at 10:00pm or after the event is over.
  • LIGHTED, LIGHTED, LIGHTED.  IT IS SO DARK THERE WHEN THE LIGHTS ARE OFF.  I WOULD RECOMMEND THE LIGHTS BE TURNED OFF AT 9 PM
  • Lighted for sure. Turn off at 9:00 week nights and 10:00 weekends.
  • I live in Meadowridge and would absolutely expect the field to remain lighted.  It is exciting for the kids as well as the spectators and allows a myriad of teams to practice by allowing night usage. Despite what some selfish neighbors might say, it is not intrusive or unpleasant at all.  I suppose a 10 o'clock lights out time would be reasonable.
  • lighted till 9pm
  • Lights would not be necessary past 9:30 or 10 pm.
  • 9pm in DST, earlier in the winter.
  • I believe the field should continue to have lights.  Many youth organizations use the football field and if the money is available please install the new high tech lights Tony Arnold discussed briefly.
  • LIGHTED -  9-9:30 pm
  • It needs to be lighted. Lights need to be off by 11 pm
  • The field needs to be lighted.  The lights should turn off when the sporting event comes to an end.  The people who bought homes near or behind the school were well aware that there would be added traffic, noise and lights.  They should be happy that it's not as noisy as an airfield and safer than having a jail close by!
  • I would prefer to have the fields lighted as my son plays football for GN buckeye league. IT has been a great experience for him and we would appreciate if they could be put back after construction. Whatever time is deemed appropriate would be fine, 10pm at the lased.
  • Lighted. Off by 10.
  • Lighted, 10:00 pm.
  • lit  - please also consider irrigation for the fields
  • I think the fields should be lighted.  It is important to emphasize physical activity to our younger children.  We have so many children wanting to participate in sports that games and practices can not all be conducted during daylight hours, therefore lights are necessary.  I don't have a specific time for lights out, but would think that all practices and games could be conducted by about 9:30pm.
  • I prefer lights as stated above, they could be turned off at 8:00pm. I think it is interesting that the housing development that complains I am sure uses the school as an asset to sell their houses. The school has been their a long time.
  • Lighted - turn off the lights by 9:00.
  • Lighted.  They should be turned off at ten.
  • lighted
  • Lighted and off at 9pm
  • lighted; turn off lights at 9:30 pm
  • Lighted.  9 p.m.
  • Lighted with the turn off time no later than 9:00PM
  • Lighted - we have some many teams that need to practice and play and our day light hours are limited in the fall, winter and spring.  I think 10 pm is the latest they light would need to be on - but really even 8 or 9 pm would likely answer most needs.
  • Definitely lighted. Turn off should be as late as possible. no earlier than 10pm
  • Yes!
  • Lighted - the lights should be off NLT than 9:00 pm Fridays (for Flag Football), 8:00pm should be late enough for all other days.
  • Lighted!  I do not know what is customary (10:00 p.m.?), but evening sports should be accommodated.
  • Lighted.  Turned off with the last sporting event of the evening.
  • LIGHTED!!!!!!!!!!!! Off at 9:30 to 10 p.m.
  • Yes -definitely!  Lights should go off at about 10:00 p.m.
  • LIGHTED!!! Please! Our Buckeye Football program cannot operate without lights, resulting in a great loss for our children. Please SAVE THE LIGHTS!!!!!
  • Lighted.  I recommend the lights off at 9pm or on a timer that allows them to be on if being utilized up until 9pm.
  • Lighted......lighted.....lighted....  They must remain lighted to allow our children to have the opportunity to play sports and not be restricted to daytime hours...especially in the fall and spring.
  • LIGHTED!  Due to the fact that these are kids most of the activities are at a reasonable time.  Football practice usually ends by 8:30 during the week and the Friday night flag games might run until 9:30.
  • Lighted 9:00 pm
  • I would recommend the field stay lighted.  I would recommend turning the lights off at 9 p.m.
  • Lighted and turned off at 8pm
  • Lighted!!! until 10:00pm
  • lighted, 9pm
  • Lighted. A reasonable time would be 8:30 p.m. even on school nights this gives plenty of time for all children to have left school grounds and be at home relaxed or doing homework, or even getting ready for bed without having the lights causing any kind of disruption.
  • Lighted.
  • Lighted and they could be turned off around 8:30
  • Lighted.  Lights should be turned off at 10:00 p.m.
  • Please please please light the fields.  We are desperate for practice fields in this community.  Even with Great Neck's existing lights, there are not enough fields for this community.  Please please keep the lights.
  • I prefer that the field be lighted.  My children do not attend school at great neck middle.  They use the fields for sports.  As many issues as we are having with children these days why would you want to take away the children's ability to have sports related activities on those fields after dark.  The compromise would be to turn the lights off after 9:00 pm.  People that live directly in the neighborhoods surround the fields need to compromise and think about the kids as well.
  • Lighted until 9:30PM
  • I prefer the field to be lighted, 9:00 PM for turnoff.
  • LIGHTED!!!! Maybe turn lights off by 8 pm weeknights, 9 pm weekends.
  • YES 10PM
  • lighted would be nice, but I think with all the money on north great neck a donation/s to fund the putting lights instead of tax dollars paying for lights would be fair. I would prefer lights at the Cox high school baseball field before the middle school gets lights.
  • LIGHTED!  When in use many teams practice until 8:45!
  • Yes- the lights should stay. There needs to be more personal responsibility coming from the users of the fields. The lights benefit a far, far greater amount of Great Neck area residents than it offends. Light should be off by 9:00PM.
  • Lighted / turned off by 10PM
  • Lighted - 10:00 p.m.
  • Lighted!!!!!!
  • Lighted!!!! The lights should be turned off by 9:30pm or not turned when the field is not in use
  • Lighted....keep the lights on until 10:00. Kids need safe well lit places to hang out.  There are enough dark alleys to get in trouble.
  • Lighted until 9 PM
  • Lighted.  9:15-9:30
  • Lighted to allow for longer season. But the function of a lighted field does not need to be satisfied at the current location. Moving the field towards Great Neck Rd., using an alternative site, should all be pursued.
  • Lighted - 9 p.m.
  • Keep the lights, they have been there for the football leagues for as long as we can remember, and generations of boys have played football in a great place for all to watch.  Turn off the lights after the last game.
  • DEFINITELY LIGHTED. My sons have all participate in sports programs that utilize those fields at nice and it would be an absolute shame if those amazing programs had to be done away with .I think 9:00 is a reasonable time for lights out.
  • Lighted. 8:00
  • Lighted.  10pm
  • Yes, the lights could be turned off around 9 pm
  • Lighted  No later than 10:00PM Max
  • lighted; 900
  • Lighted- absolutely.  Why cut after school and recreation sports off at dusk?  That is a horrible waste of a resource to limit its hours to daytime use only
  • Prefer for it to be lighted.  Lights can be turned off after the last game.  Generally by 9pm.
  • Light the fields------please!!!!!!! Turn off lights when sports are completed, 9 pm is a good time
  • We need the fields lighted.  Lights should stay on until the last game is played.  9pm
  • lighted/ the coaches would know the best time to suggest
  • I would like the lights to remain.  When I moved to the area 4 1/2 years ago, a friend who already lived here told me about how great the sports and recreation are in Great Neck for children.  The lights support a wonderful football league.
