Pembroke Elementary's Alvenia LeBoeuf
Named 2000 VBCPS Teacher of the Year

Alvenia LeBoeuf, special education teacher at Pembroke Elementary School, was recently named the 2000 VBCPS Teacher of the Year. In a surprise visit to her classroom, Superintendent Timothy R. Jenney and Associate Superintendent Sheila S. Magula made the announcement and presented her with roses and other congratulatory gifts.

Chosen from an initial pool of 84 teachers representing their schools, LeBoeuf was one of several finalists selected to receive classroom visits by the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee. According to Chairperson Margaret Buxton, all the finalists were outstanding, but LeBoeuf stood out because of her "ability to work with each student to bring out the child's individual best."

LeBoeuf is a 28-year veteran teacher. She came to the Beach in 1970 and first taught at Windsor Oaks Elementary School. She has also taught at Kings Grant and Brookwood Elementary Schools. LeBoeuf earned a Bachelor of Science from Norfolk State University and has also earned special education certification to teach children who are emotionally disturbed and/or have learning disabilities.

According to Cletus Griffin, principal at Pembroke Elementary, LeBoeuf is a teacher who "develops a rapport and respect with her students that enables her to motivate them to achieve high levels of academic and social skills. Students in her class consistently display confidence in their academic performance, self-esteem, physical abilities, and enjoy a feeling of unity as a class."

LeBoeuf has served in numerous leadership roles and has served as a cooperating teacher for student teachers, participated in a Virginia Department of Education 18-month research study on class size and students with various disabilities, and been active in many school and community committees. In addition, she has worked on/attended a broad array of professional workshops, particularly in her specialty of special education.

LeBoeuf's awards and honors are numerous. Among them are her designation as a career teacher honor recipient, teacher of the year designations for Pembroke Elementary, and a Distinguished Service Award of the Virginia Congress of Parents and Teachers.
