VBCPS Will Honor Retiring Employees

Virginia Beach City Public Schools will bid farewell to over 200 employees during a retirement dinner at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 26 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center.

The employees worked an average of 23.7 years with Virginia Beach schools. They have collectively served a total of 5,123 years.

During the program, the school division will recognize several retiring employees for achieving the longest years of service. Those employees are:

  • Barbara McMillan, guidance department chairman, Open Campus, 48 years
  • Malveen Lewis, bus driver, Office of Transportation Services, 42 years. At 82-years-old, Lewis is also the oldest retiree.
  • Ann S. Harrison, guidance department chair, Salem Middle School, 41 years    
  • Lorriane Bennett, Latin teacher, Cox High School, 41 years
  • Elizabeth “Betsy” Taylor, assistant superintendent, Department of School Administration, 41 years
  • David Walker, driver education teacher, Green Run High School, 41 years
  • Georgia Christie, coordinator, social studies, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, 40 years
  • Lizzie “Liz” Warren, principal, College Park Elementary, 40 years

The program will also include an invocation by School Board member Patrick Salyer. Remarks will be delivered by Em Davis, member of the Virginia Beach School Board; Dr. James Merrill, superintendent; and John Mirra, assistant superintendent of Human Resources.
