Studies Academy Hosts Law Day Event

The Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial High School will welcome The Honorable William R. “Buster” O’Brien, Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge, to celebrate Law Day on May 28.  The program which will include remarks from O’Brien along with an awards and recognition ceremony for the Academy’s Class of 2009 will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the school auditorium. First Colonial High School is located at 1272 Mill Dam Road.

Law Day is a tradition initiated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 to encourage Americans to respect and celebrate the nation’s heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under the law. Today, the American Bar Association (ABA) uses Law Day as an opportunity to work with organizations and schools to promote meaningful discussions about the law and its role in our society.  This year, the ABA is celebrating the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth and his many contributions as both the president and one of America’s greatest lawyers.

“This is an exciting opportunity for students in the Legal Studies Academy to reflect on Lincoln’s legacy of liberty and also hear from a judge in our own community about current applications of the law and the challenges of the modern day legal system,” said Paige Scherr, academy coordinator.

Judge O’Brien will share his experiences as a lawyer, judge, and state lawmaker. O’Brien currently presides as a judge in the Virginia Beach Circuit Court.  He is a former member of the Virginia House of Delegates (1980-1985) and is a long-standing member of many prestigious organizations such as the American Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and The College of William and Mary Board of Visitors. O’Brien holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Richmond and a Juris Doctorate from The College of William and Mary.
