Education Foundation Dedicates
The House Students Built

The Virginia Beach Public Schools Education Foundation and students from the Technical and Career Education Center will dedicate the seventh The House Students Built on Friday, May 22 at 11:30 a.m. The house, located at 816 13th Street in Virginia Beach, was constructed by students who worked side by side with local builders, electricians, plumbers, and craftsmen. This 1,500 square foot home features three bedrooms and two and a half baths, numerous upgrades, and is located just minutes from the oceanfront.

The House Students Built project is an on-going Education Foundation initiative. To date, six student built homes have been sold with profits exceeding $500,000. The Education Foundation distributes the money to teachers and schools in the form of grants which support innovative learning projects. In addition, the Foundation offers scholarships for postgraduate study at a college or technical school to two seniors who participated in the house project in a specific trade area such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, or landscape design.

“It is exciting to see the exquisite work these students have done,” said Superintendent Dr. James G. Merrill. “It is even more remarkable when you take into account that students work onsite at the house for less than two hours a day since they must divide their time between the Tech Center and their home schools,” Merrill added.

This seventh House Students Built will be listed for sale this summer. The previous house project home recently sold for $327,500.  For more information about The House Students Built project or the Virginia Beach Public Schools Education Foundation, contact Debbie Thomas, Foundation coordinator at 757.263.1337 or by email at debbie.thomas@vbschools.com.
