The Virginia Beach School Board has re-elected Daniel D. “Dan” Edwards for a tenth term as chairman and Rita Sweet Bellitto for a second term as vice-chair. In years past, the selection of the chairman and vice-chairman took place during the Board’s summer organizational meeting; however, that changed when local school board and city council elections were moved from May to November this year.

Representing the Centerville district for more than a decade, Edwards was first elected to the School Board in 1998 and was recently re-elected for his fourth term. A Navy retiree with 25 years of service, Edwards owns a small business in Virginia Beach. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and a master’s in business administration from The College of William and Mary.
 
Rita Sweet Bellitto joined the School Board in 2004 as an at-large member and was re-elected for a second term this past November. Bellitto is a former civil engineer with the City of Virginia Beach, and currently works as an online reader, scoring numerous national academic tests. She holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Stanford University, a master’s in public administration from Troy State University, and a bachelor’s degree in biology from Bucknell University.
