Parent Institute Sponsored by Office of Gifted Education
Slated for August 23


Attention, parents of gifted students! A Parent Institute, created specifically for parents of gifted children, is slated for Saturday, August 23, from 8:30 a.m. to
3 p.m. The Institute is being sponsored by Virginia Beach Schools’
Office of Gifted Education
and will feature strategies for “unlocking the potential”
of gifted students.

The keynote speaker is Dr. Sylvia Rimm, a clinical psychologist known for her sense of calm and reason and practical approach. She has authored many articles and books including Keys to Parenting the Gifted Child, How to Parent
So Children Will Learn, Why Bright Kids Get Poor Grades And What You Can
Do About It, Raising Preschoolers,
and See Jane Win. The latter was a
New York Times
bestseller and was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Today and in People Magazine.

Numerous breakout sessions are scheduled which cover all age groups, from elementary to high school. Among the topics featured are creative play, perfectionism, introversion, the highly sensitive child, problem-solving styles, underachievement, organization skills and time management, social and emotional development, adolescence, and the College Admission Process.

Registration is recommended so that attendees are placed in the breakout sessions of their choice. The Parent Institute is free. It will be held at
Landstown High School
