The Virginia Beach School Board at its Tuesday, May 6 meeting revisited its earlier decision to raise summer school tuition rates for high school courses. As part of the action agenda, the School Board voted to lower high school summer school tuition rates as follows:

HS Summer Program – Year Course Tuition Rate
        Level I – full cost lunch              $300
        Level II – reduced cost lunch   $150
        Level III – free lunch                   $75

HS Summer Program – Semester Course Tuition Rate
       Level I – full cost lunch               $200
       Level II – reduced cost lunch     $100
       Level III – free lunch                     $40

The original tuition increase, however, was part of a proposal that would have changed the way that Virginia Beach City Public Schools deliver remediation services to students. The new approach involved earmarking monies typically used to fund summer school for individual schools to use for remediation services to be delivered during the school year. The School Board will discuss this further at its May 20 budget workshop.
