The Virginia Beach School Board will receive information on the federal grants for which the school division intends to apply – Federal Grants for SY 2008-2009, Public Law 107-110, No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 – at its upcoming meeting on Tuesday, May 6.

Information on applications for each of the following Federal Programs will be presented to the Board:

  • Title I, Part A - Improving Basic Programs Operated by Local Educational Agencies (LEA)
  • Title I, Part D - Prevention and Intervention Programs for Children and Youth Who Are Neglected, Delinquent, or At Risk
  • Title II, Part A - Preparing, Training, and Recruiting High Quality Teachers and Principals
  • Title II, Part D - Enhancing Education through Technology
  • Title III, Part A - Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient and Immigrant Students
  • Title IV, Part A - Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities

Virginia Beach City Public Schools applies annually for grant assistance as appropriated under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Funds are available to support local education reform efforts that are consistent with statewide education reform efforts to: (1) provide funding to implement promising education reform programs and school improvement programs based on scientifically-based research; (2) provide a continuing source of innovative and educational improvement; (3) meet the educational needs of all students; and (4) develop and implement educational programs to improve student achievement and teacher performance.

The Virginia Department of Education provides guidelines, instructions, and assurances to each school division, which then must certify that it will use the funds as stipulated and in compliance with all applicable statutes, regulations, policies, program plans, and applications. Finally, the school system must agree to implement all assurances for each of the programs and certify that it is authorized by the superintendent and School Board to file the application.

For more information about the Federal Grants Programs, please contact the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at 263-1070.
