Beach School Board Selects New Internal Auditor

Carroll L. (Lee) Acors has been appointed to serve as director of internal audit for Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Acors, who assumes his new duties on Monday, September 10, was appointed by the School Board at its August 7 meeting.

In his new position, Acors will be responsible for assisting all members of the school division’s administration and School Board meet their responsibilities by providing objective analyses, appraisals, recommendations, and pertinent comments concerning activities reviewed. Some of the tasks Acors will perform include reviewing and appraising the soundness, adequacy and applications of accounting, financial and other operating controls, and promoting an effective system of internal controls at a reasonable cost; recommending operating improvements; establishing an annual program of audits; providing follow-up on audit reports sufficient to determine the degree of compliance with audit recommendations; and other duties.

Acors has a 26-year background in financial operations, most recently serving as the manager of financial reporting for the Norfolk Southern Corporation. Other positions he has held include vice president for internal audit for FHS Health Systems/Value Options; director of finance for the National Maritime Center Foundation (known as Nauticus); director of finance for the City of Suffolk; audit manager for the City of Norfolk; and audit positions for the accounting firm of Price Waterhouse.

He holds several professional certifications, including certified public accountant; certified fraud examiner; and certified internal auditor.

Acors received a bachelor’s of science degree in psychology and anthropology from The College of William and Mary. He completed post baccalaureate accounting studies from William and Mary in 1981.
