The Parent Resource Center is a part of the Office of Programs for Exceptional Children for Virginia Beach City Public Schools. The purpose of the Parent Resource Center is to provide parents of students with disabilities information and training to be informed participants in the processes that enable their child to acquire knowledge and skills necessary to meet the challenges of the future.
The goals of the Parent Resource Center include the facilitation of effective communication between parents and school personnel for the benefit of students with disabilities and the provision of information to parents that will enable their meaningful participation as team members in the special education process. This is done by offering the following resources to parents:
- Consultation services in person, by phone (757.263.2066), or by e-mail (ruth.page@vbschools.com)
- A lending library of books and video tapes on disability related topics
- Reference materials on disability topics
- Announcements of workshops and conferences related to disability information
- Provision of workshops related to interests of parents about educational planning
- Community resource information
- Other services that parents may need to affirm their role as the primary support source for their child
The Parent Resource Center is open throughout the calendar year. However, it is closed occasionally for workshops, training, and individual parent conferences. It is strongly recommended that parents call the Parent Resource Center at 757.263.2066 before visiting. If the line is busy, there is an opportunity to leave a message. The voice mail is monitored regularly, so parents should not hesitate to leave their names and numbers and times they can best be reached. |
