Virginia Beach Schools Names Patricia McGloine
the 2007 Citywide Teacher of the Year

McGloinePatricia H. McGloine, a social studies teacher at Princess Anne High School, was today named the citywide 2007 Virginia Beach City Public Schools Teacher of the Year. In a surprise visit made to her classroom this morning, Superintendent Sheila S. Magula, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Christine Caskey, and School Board Chairman Dan Edwards made the announcement and presented her with an engraved school bell and other congratulatory gifts.

Chosen from an initial pool of 88 teachers representing their schools, McGloine was one of five finalists selected to receive classroom visits by the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee. According to Selection Committee Chairperson and principal of Landstown Elementary School Lavern Chatman, while all the finalists were outstanding, McGloine was extraordinary in her ability to create a student-centered classroom, where students are encouraged to think critically and analytically, sharing their ideas. Moreover, according to Chatman, students learn to trace relationships to current events, compare and contrast historical events and conduct independent research in order to grow as learners.

“Patricia McGloine is a truly exemplary teacher,” said Chatman. “She is inspiring in her abilities to motivate and encourage her students, meeting their needs inside and outside of the classroom. Her expertise extends to her colleagues as well in that she works to mentor teachers and involves herself in activities that advance her instruction and promote history whenever possible.”

McGloine is a 20-year veteran teacher, with all of these years dedicated to Virginia Beach City Public Schools and Princess Anne High School. McGloine has taught all levels of social studies, from ninth to twelfth grades, from low to advanced levels. Currently, she teaches both IB (International Baccalaureate) and AP (Advanced Placement) courses.

McGloine has assumed numerous leadership roles. She has served on a variety of committees, ranging from school planning councils to ninth-grade transition committees to history textbook adoption and curriculum committees. She also has served for 11 years as a reader for AP grading and has advanced to the position of “table leader.” Her professional associations are also numerous, among them the Virginia Beach Education Association, the Virginia High School Coaches Association, the National Parent Teacher Association, and the Virginia Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

McGloine is the recipient of a variety of awards and recognitions, including The Distinguished Educator Award, the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) Teacher of the Year at Princess Anne High School, the VHSCA (Virginia High School Coaches’ Association) Coach Award, and the “I Make a Difference” Award.

McGloine holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history as well as a Master of Science degree in education: curriculum and instruction.
