| Plaza
and Seatack elementary
schools have been selected as a 2005-2006 Year-Round School of Merit
by the National Association for Year-Round Education (NAYRE). This honor
was awarded to only four year-round elementary schools in the United
States and is based upon commitment to improving the educational experience
through the use of a balanced calendar and reducing summer learning
loss. Schools earning this award serve as national role models for other
schools seeking academic excellence through time and learning. Mary F. Daniels, Plaza Elementary principal feels privileged that her school is recognized nationally as a year-round school of excellence. “We have a very dedicated, hard-working faculty and staff”, said Daniels. “Our parents are extremely supportive and the students are excellent. All stake holders are focused on academic excellence and student achievement.” As principal of the division’s first year-round school program, Katherine R. Everett is proud that Seatack Elementary continues to shine nationally. “With a strong cohesive unit of parents, students, staff, administration, and community, Seatack sets the highest of standards in student achievement. We now realize that there is nothing we can not accomplish, said Everett.” Plaza and Seatack elementary schools are two of four elementary schools in the division operating on a year-round calendar and the third year-round school to receive this honor. Corporate Landing Elementary School was a 2004-2005 recipient of the Year-Round School of Merit by the NAYRE. Virginia Beach City Public Schools implemented its first year-round school – Seatack Elementary – in 2000. The principals of Plaza and Seatack elementary schools will accept their awards during the 37th annual NAYRE conference February 25-29, 2006, in San Diego, California. |
