For the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, as well as other school districts across the nation, the search for new substitute bus drivers is ongoing. The school division's Office of Transportation Services is now seeking substitute bus driver candidates who fill in for many contracted bus drivers during their absences that are often caused by medical reasons. Working as a substitute bus driver accommodates many lifestyles, especially for stay-at-home moms and dads, retirees and anyone looking for a job that offers a lot of flexibility. Most substitute and contracted bus drivers work early to the mid-morning period, take a mid-day break and then return to pick-up students from school and take them home during the afternoon. The benefits of the job are guaranteed steady work assignments throughout the school year from September to June; earn $8.50 per hour; time off during school holidays and summers. Substitute bus driver candidates must be at least 21-years-old; and possess a good driving record. Although a Virginia Commercial Drivers License is required for the job, the school division will help qualified drivers without a required license secure a Commercial Drivers License.
