A group of Kellam High School students will officially become entrepreneurs with the Monday, December 10 opening of Coffee Days with the Kellam Knights, a food service venture located in the cafeteria of the Special Education Annex of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Coffee Days with Kellam Knights will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the annex. The annex is located in the former Linkhorn Park Elementary School building at 1413 Laskin Road. The enterprise initially opened on September 19. The event is scheduled to take place at 9 a.m. It will include remarks from Virginia Beach Mayor Meyera Oberndorf; Dan Edwards, chairman of the Virginia Beach School Board; Dr. Tim Jenney, superintendent of Virginia Beach City Public Schools; and Kellam High School students. A special mural will be unveiled. Coffee Days with Kellam Knights provides practical job skills for the school's special education students. As employees, eight student workers market their wares of fresh pastries and gourmet coffees. The venture is an instructional collaboration between staff from the school division's Office of Programs for Exceptional Children and the Office of Technical and Career Education. Under the direction of two Kellam instructors, the students learn the business skills necessary to start and maintain a small business. These skills include operational procedures, customer service, sales, record keeping and other critical tasks.
