New Students Should Enroll Immediately

New students or those transferring within the Virginia Beach school system should enroll as soon as possible at the elementary, middle, or high school to which their neighborhoods are assigned. This is usually the school nearest the student's residence. The Demographics Office has a complete listing of all school attendance zones. For questions about school zones, call the office at (757) 426-5888.

Early student registration is requested to ensure that each school assigns the appropriate number of teachers to meet the state pupil-teacher ratio requirements.

Parents enrolling their children in a Virginia Beach school for the first time must present a certified birth certificate to the school. Also needed are the student's social security number, immunization record, proof of residence/address, and a report card from the last school attended, if applicable. A copy of a physical examination completed within one year prior to entering elementary school is also required by Virginia law for entry into elementary school. Along with DPT and Polio requirements, all students, kindergarten through grade 12, must have a second measles vaccination. Students who were born on or after January 1, 1994, must have the Hepatitis B vaccine series.

In addition, legislation requires that students who will be in sixth grade on or after July 1, 2001, must also have the Hepatitis B vaccine series. Documentation for all immunizations must include the month, day, and year that these have been received.

Transfer certificates and/or scholastic records from a previous school help with placement of the student at the appropriate grade level. An official transcript from the former school will then be requested by the receiving Virginia Beach school.

Prospective kindergartners entering Virginia Beach City Public Schools for the 2001-2002 school year must be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2001.

Further information is available from each public school and Student Services at (757) 427-4791.
