Trantwood Elementary School
to Hold Ground Breaking Ceremony
As a kickoff for an $8.6 million modernization project at Trantwood Elementary School, school principal Dr. Patricia Slaughter will host a traditional ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday, May 22, 2002, on the school grounds.

The ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. and features brief remarks by a variety of officials to include Dr. Timothy Jenney, school superintendent, and Chairman of the Virginia Beach School Board Dan Edwards. Mayor Meyera Oberndorf will also speak as will Dr. Slaughter. In addition, fourth- and fifth-grade students will perform a musical selection from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, and for a change of pace, God Bless the U.S.A. by Lee Greenwood.

The modernization project will upgrade the school building with new features that include new classrooms, a media center, art and music classrooms, a larger physical education area, and furniture and new equipment. The physical plant will also be modernized with state-of-the-art technology and with electrical, lighting, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems.

Trantwood Elementary School, located at 2344 Inlynnview Road, was built in 1963. In 1969, an additional wing comprising six classrooms and two activity rooms was constructed. A gymnasium was added in 1990.
