Edwards and Rose Elected to Lead School Board
The Virginia Beach School Board has re-elected Daniel D. "Dan" Edwards as its chairman for
the new fiscal year. Board Member Neil L. Rose was elected to serve as vice chairman. The actions
were part of the Board's annual organizational procedure.
Edwards, the Centerville representative, was first elected to the Board in 1998. A 25-year
veteran of the U.S. Navy, he is the owner of a small business in Virginia Beach. Edwards
has been an active force in many civic organizations and is a long-time Parents Teachers
Association member (since 1984). He holds a bachelor's from Northwestern University and a
master's in business administration from The College of William and Mary. He has two children who
are graduates of Virginia Beach City Public Schools. This will be his third one-year term as Board
chairman.
Representing the city's residents as an at-large member, Rose is in the midst of his second
four-year term. He is an attorney in private practice in Virginia Beach and has been an active member
in numerous legal professional organizations. His civic involvement includes serving as a board
member of the Kiwanis, the Governor's School of the Arts, and the Hampton Roads Juvenile
Diabetes Foundation. Rose holds a bachelor's degree in business and a law degree from the
University of Virginia and a master's of law in taxation from Georgetown University Law Center. He
has three children in the school system, one in high school and two in middle school. This
is his first term as a Board officer. He replaces Arthur Tate who served as vice chairman for the past
two years. Tate decided not to seek another term as vice chairman citing a desire to spend more time with his family.
