Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Chief Academic Officer tapped to lead
Henrico County Schools

Virginia Beach Schools' Chief Academic Officer Dr. Amy Cashwell was appointed today as the next superintendent of Henrico County Public Schools, a diverse school community outside of Richmond serving approximately 50,000 students.

"I am incredibly honored to have this opportunity, and I look forward to building upon the legacy of excellence in Henrico County schools," Cashwell said. "Still, this is a bittersweet moment for me. VBCPS has been my 'home' for more than 20 years. The experiences I've had here first as a high school student and then later as a teacher, administrator and central office leader have been truly amazing. The talented people, plentiful programs and outstanding opportunities for VBCPS students and staff are unparalleled."

Cashwell joined VBCPS in 1998 as a second-grade teacher before serving as an elementary school principal and, most recently, as the Chief Academic Officer.

"Dr. Cashwell is an exceptional leader and champion for children," said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "She is unwavering in her commitment to providing high-quality, personalized learning experiences for all students while also ensuring they have the social and emotional supports to learn and grow. Henrico families will be fortunate to have Dr. Cashwell at the helm of their schools."

During her tenure with VBCPS, Cashwell has been instrumental in the development of the division's multiple academic pathways for students, the implementation of equity initiatives and the expansion of student support services. She has been recognized for her leadership and vision in the school division's digital learning transformation and by the Virginia Society for Technology in Education as the 2016 Outstanding Leader of the Year. In addition, the Center for Digital Education named Cashwell a 2017 Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers in recognition of her leadership and transformational work to personalize learning and support student success.

Cashwell will remain with Virginia Beach schools through the end of the school year. The search for the division's next Chief Academic Officer will begin immediately.

"Everyone here in VBCPS wishes Dr. Cashwell the very best as she begins this next chapter in her career," Spence said. "While we will miss her tremendously, we look forward to seeing the incredible work she will do in partnership with the teachers, staff, parents and community partners in Henrico County."
