Anderson re-elected as School Board chairwoman, McDonald elected vice chairman

At its Jan. 9 meeting, the School Board of the City of Virginia Beach re-elected Beverly M. Anderson as chairwoman and elected Joel McDonald as vice chairman.

Anderson was elected to the School Board At-Large seat in November 2012 and re-elected in 2016. She served as School Board vice chairwoman for two years before being elected as chairwoman in 2017. Anderson is a retired 36-year veteran elementary school teacher who served in various roles during her tenure with Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS). She holds a bachelor's degree in education from Concord University. Anderson's community involvement has included roles as president of the USS Nimitz Officers Wives' Club; secretary, board member and faculty representative for the Virginia Beach Education Association; board member of Atlantic Soccer Club and board member of the Hampton Roads Sand Soccer Council. Anderson has also been a committed member of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), both as a teacher and a parent, and she has earned lifetime PTA awards at both Pembroke Elementary School and Alanton Elementary School. Both of Anderson's sons graduated from VBCPS.

McDonald was elected to the School Board in 2012 and re-elected in 2016. Prior to joining the board, he was the data support specialist at Luxford Elementary from 2006 to 2012, where he also served as the school improvement specialist for a time. While at Luxford, he was an active member of the school's PTA, serving as its treasurer, and he was the school's building representative for the Virginia Beach Education Association. McDonald is a second-generation alumnus of Bayside High School and was among the first students to attend VBCPS' Advanced Technology Center where he completed the Cisco Networking Academy. He attended Old Dominion University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in political science. Professionally, he provides web design, development and hosting through his firm, McDonald Web Works.
