Five more Virginia Beach schools
receive state VIP awards

Five additional Virginia Beach schools earned a 2017 Virginia Index of Performance (VIP) Award, according to an updated report from the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). The VIP awards are presented annually by the governor and Virginia Board of Education to recognize academic excellence and distinguished achievement.

Glenwood, Landstown, North Landing, Rosemont Forest and Cooke elementary schools all earned the Board of Education Distinguished Achievement Award. This award recognizes schools or divisions that met all state and federal benchmarks and made progress toward the goals of the governor and the board.

According to the VDOE press release, these five schools were inadvertently left out of the state’s original announcement of VIP award winners back in August due to an omission in point calculations.

With the addition of these schools, Virginia Beach City Public Schools now has 29 VIP award recipients; more than double the number of awards received in 2016.

“We are thrilled to see our list of VIP award-winning schools continue to grow,” said VBCPS Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. “I am proud to have even more of our students, staff and school communities recognized with this incredible honor for their dedicated work in the classroom.”

This announcement is continued good news for the division. This year, VBCPS achieved its highest graduation rate, lowest dropout rate and 100 percent Standards of Learning (SOL) accreditation. In addition, the division’s most recent SAT scores are the highest in Hampton Roads and bested the national average.
