VBCPS Class of 2017 offered a record
$87.4 million in scholarships

Graduating seniors in Virginia Beach City Public Schools’ (VBCPS) Class of 2017 have earned and accepted the highest scholarship amounts of any VBCPS graduating class. As reported to high school guidance offices, seniors have been offered a record $87,487,335 in scholarships and have accepted $58,045,518* to date. Scholarships granted by in-state and out-of-state institutions to students from all 11 VBCPS comprehensive high schools and Green Run Collegiate are represented in the totals.

Class of 2017 scholarship totals exceed amounts offered to last year’s graduating class by $10.6 million and amounts accepted by $8.2 million. The record amount of $87.4 million is more than double the $43.2 million in scholarships offered five years ago to the Class of 2012.

“We join our students’ families in celebrating all of our graduating seniors’ hard work, which has not only led to their acceptance to colleges and universities nationwide but also earned them these incredible financial opportunities,” said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. “Being offered a record $87 million in scholarships demonstrates the Class of 2017’s commitment to excellence in academics, activities and athletics, and we know our graduates will continue to make the division proud in their future endeavors.”

The school division makes scholarship opportunities and resources readily available to students and families through Scholarship Central. The online, searchable database found on www.vbschools.com lets visitors access scholarship information submitted by school counselors, civic groups, foundations, schools and other organizations. The site is updated throughout the year.
