Princess Anne Middle and Woodstock Elementary named National PTA Schools of Excellence

Woodstock Elementary and Princess Anne Middle School are two of 173 schools nationwide to earn the National PTA School of Excellence designation. They are two of just 14 schools in Virginia earning this honor as well. Since the recognition program was created in 2014, more than 460 schools have been awarded the designation.

"Through both research and our day-to-day work with students, we know that one of the key indicators of a child's academic success is parental involvement," said Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) Superintendent Dr. Aaron Spence. "I am so proud to have both Woodstock and Princess Anne honored with this designation as it is proof of the value placed on partnering our schools and families to best support our students."

According to the National PTA, the School of Excellence recognition program supports and celebrates partnerships between PTAs and schools to enrich the educational experience and overall well-being for all students.

In order for a school to receive this designation, a survey series must find that school families either report a high level of family engagement at the school or that the PTA has made substantive, positive improvement in families' perceptions since the beginning of the school year.

"In the PTA, we want to be a resource for our student families as well as our schools," said Alice Catherman, president of the Virginia Beach Council of PTAs. "To have two of our division's schools honored with this national award showcases that our members are utilizing the best practices available to create engaging and collaborative environments for our students and families."

Earlier this month, both schools received National PTA School of Excellence award banners to display in their schools. Both schools will have this designation for two years, through 2018.
