See two calendar options for the 2017-18
school year and give your feedback

In December, Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) administration will bring forward a 2017-18 school year calendar recommendation to the School Board for its consideration. In order to make an informed recommendation, administration is asking for the public to view and weigh in on two calendar options.

Earlier this month, the School Board directed the 2017-18 Calendar Committee to build a calendar that would include professional learning days for staff, limit the use of adjusted dismissal days, use Mondays and Fridays for the division’s staff and professional learning days and extend winter break, if possible.

With this guidance in mind, the calendar committee created two calendar options for the 2017-18 school year, which are now available for community review and input on the school division's online forum, e-Town Hall.

Option “A” has two embedded days of professional learning for teachers during the school year (Monday, Oct. 9 - Columbus Day and Monday, Feb. 19 - Presidents’ Day).

Option “B” has two embedded days of professional learning for teachers prior to the end of the first semester (Tuesday, Aug. 29 and Monday, Oct. 9 - Columbus Day). The inclusion of a professional learning day during the annual staff inservice week is possible by creating a Staff Day Thursday, August 24. This day would include time for staff to work in their classrooms and opportunities to make up any previously missed professional learning sessions.

Those interested in viewing the calendar proposals and offering feedback can visit e-Town Hall through 12 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1. All input will be considered before a final recommendation is made. A summary of feedback will also be provided to the School Board as part of the calendar adoption process.
