Federal grant information presented
to School Board

At its June 7 meeting, the Virginia Beach School Board received information on federal grants for which Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) intends to apply for school year 2016-17. Should all grants be awarded, VBCPS would receive approximately $13.1 million.

The school division intends to apply for each of the following federal grants:

  • Title I, Part A - Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged: Improving Basic Programs Operated by Local Educational Agencies (LEA)
  • Title I, Part D - Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged: Prevention and Intervention Programs for Children and Youth Who Are Neglected, Delinquent or At Risk
  • Title II, Part A - Preparing, Training and Recruiting High Quality Teachers and Principals: Teacher and Principal Training and Recruiting Fund
  • Title III, Part A - Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient and Immigrant Students

VBCPS applies annually for grant assistance as appropriated under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). Funds are available to support local education reform efforts that are consistent with statewide education reform efforts.

The Virginia Department of Education provides guidelines, instructions and assurances to local school divisions, which must certify they will use the funds as stipulated and in compliance with all applicable statutes, regulations, policies, program plans and applications. Each school division must agree to implement all assurances for each of the programs and certify that it is authorized by its superintendent and school board to file the application.
