VBCPS partnering with UVA teaching
fellowship to develop new teachers

Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is partnering with the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia to pilot a new method of preparing and retaining high quality teachers.

The Curry Teaching Fellowship is designed to bridge the gap between teacher preparation at the university and teacher induction at the local school division level. Through this partnership, VBCPS will hire Curry teacher candidates for a yearlong residency in areas of critical need, such as special education, secondary math, science and technology.

“This partnership with Curry Teaching Fellowship represents a leap forward in how we prepare teachers for our classrooms,” said Dr. Aaron Spence, VBCPS superintendent. “This is akin to a residency in the medical profession, which provides individuals with in-depth training in a specific area. Our selected fellows will learn firsthand what it takes to be an outstanding teacher. We are excited to be able to offer this opportunity to those looking for a career in education.”

The fellowship will help to offset potential outstanding teacher candidates’ expenses as they pursue a graduate degree in education and professional teaching licensure as well as expand classroom opportunities for the teacher candidates.

The residency will incorporate the traditional fall student-teaching semester as well as work during the spring in instructional support roles and as co-teachers with specially trained mentor teachers. If Curry fellows commit to remaining in VBCPS for at least the first three years of their teaching careers, then, after graduation, the fellows will receive two additional years of individualized job coaching and classroom support from Curry faculty.

Selected candidates will begin their fellowships in September 2017.
