Virginia Beach School Board appoints
new chief of staff

In its meeting Tuesday, June 9, the Virginia Beach School Board appointed Marc A. Bergin chief of staff for the school division effective July 1.

His duties will include providing administrative oversight for school division operations; helping guide implementation of the Compass to 2020 strategic plan; and supporting organizational development, leadership development, succession planning and staffing priorities.

Bergin is currently the deputy superintendent of Moore County Schools, a position he has held since 2012. Before that, he was director of elementary education for five years in Chesterfield County Public Schools. He also has served as a principal in Augusta County Schools, Spotsylvania County Schools and Prince William County Schools. He began his career in education in 1990 as an elementary teacher in Indianapolis.

Bergin holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Notre Dame, a Master of Science in elementary education from Butler University, post-graduate certification in educational administration from the University of Virginia and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

“Marc Bergin is a gifted and strategic educational leader whose commitment to improving public education is ever present. I am confident he will bring that same level of energy and expertise to Virginia Beach City Public Schools,” said Superintendent Aaron Spence.

“Virginia Beach is an outstanding place to live and work, and its schools have an impressive track record of achievement. I look forward to meeting and collaborating with our students, staff, parents and community members in the coming months and years to build on that tradition,” noted Bergin.
