Hermitage Elementary earns second
National Blue Ribbon School recognition

Hermitage Elementary School was named a 2014 National Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education. The school earned this prestigious distinction for its record of high student achievement despite a significant student mobility rate. More than 200 students enroll and leave Hermitage in a given school year, yet student achievement at the school continues to exceed state and national standards.

Hermitage is one of 10 schools in Virginia to achieve the honor. Hermitage previously earned a Blue Ribbon title in 2005.

"The Blue Ribbon designation for Hermitage can be attributed to the hard work of students, the dedication of parents and the caring, passionate and skilled Hermitage staff," said Dr. Aaron Spence, superintendent of VBCPS. "The fact that this is the second time the school has earned this designation is proof that student engagement and achievement is a top priority in the Hermitage community. I am very proud of their accomplishment."

Established in 1982, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing achievement gaps. The award is designed to affirm the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content.

The program is part of a larger Department of Education effort to identify and disseminate knowledge about best school leadership and teaching practices.

"Hermitage is an example of how a diverse school community can achieve educational excellence on local, state and national levels, while also holding itself accountable for instilling global responsibility in every student that passes through its hallways," said Holly Coggin, Hermitage principal. "This award is a testament to the work of our staff, students and parents. Learning and working together is the hallmark of our success and drives us to impact the world now and for years to come."

The Blue Ribbon award will be officially presented to the school during a recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C. in November.
