Green Run Collegiate Head of School named

The Green Run Collegiate (GRC) Governing Board has named Barbara J. Winn as Head of School for GRC. Winn, a curriculum coordinator for Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS), will lead the city's first public charter school which opens in September 2013.

Winn has been with VBCPS for 21 years, having served previously as an English teacher, gifted resource teacher, International Baccalaureate (IB) coordinator at Princess Anne High School and Middle Years Program (MYP) coordinator at Plaza Middle School.

GRC Governing Board Member Hugh Greene noted that Winn's IB experience will serve GRC well since the school will offer two research-based college preparatory programs — the IB programs as well as Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID).

"Barbara Winn brings passion, competence and resilience to one of the most innovative curriculum in the district's history," Greene said. "We are confident her tenure with the school division, along with her exhaustive knowledge of the IB programs, will lead this new student body to a triumphant future. "

For her part, Winn is excited to bring the IB curriculum to a new crop of young scholars.

"IB offers a rich, engaging curriculum that makes students want to come to school each and every day," Winn said. "Their eyes are opened to the world, they become stewards of the environment, and they are life-long learners. What more could you ask for as an educator?"

GRC is a public charter school with a focus on college preparation. It will be housed on the campus of Green Run High School. GRC recently selected its first ninth-grade class through an open lottery. One grade level will be added per year until the charter program reaches its full capacity in grades nine-12 at the start of the 2016-17 school year.
