Legal Studies Academy Hosts Virginia's
Attorney General for Annual Law Day

The Legal Studies Academy at First Colonial High School will celebrate Law Day on Thursday, May 31 with Virginia Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli II as the keynote speaker. The Academy will also recognize graduating seniors and underclassmen who have earned academic honors. Law Day events will begin at 9:15 a.m. in the school auditorium.

Initiated in 1958 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, Law Day was created to provide Americans with an opportunity to learn about justice and equality under the law. The American Bar Association (ABA) uses the annual event to partner with schools and organizations in order to highlight the significance of law in our community. The theme for this year's Law Day - No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom - was chosen by the ABA to reinforce the importance of the nation's courts and the negative impact that funding shortages could have on the ability to provide access to justice for all people.

As Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Kenneth Cuccinelli will offer students a unique perspective on Virginia's courts and the intricacies of the Commonwealth's legal system. His office provides legal advice and representation in court for the Commonwealth and its agencies. In addition, Cuccinell's office enforces state laws that protect businesses and citizens from scams and investigates or assists with the investigation into certain cases including money laundering, computer crimes, and Medicaid fraud.

Cuccinelli was sworn in as Virginia's Attorney General in 2010. Prior to his election, he served as a state senator from August 2002 to January 2010, while also working as a private attorney. Cuccinelli holds a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Virginia, a master's degree in international commerce and policy from George Mason University, and a juris doctor from George Mason University.
