Regulation 6-56.1
INSTRUCTION
Field Trips
Field trips should be a valuable part of the instructional program and should serve to extend student learning. In planning field trips, schools will follow the regulation described below.
A. The Department of Instructional Support Services will provide guidance to the schools concerning field trips.
B. Field trips should relate to the approved curriculum.
1. Field trips will relate to a specific objective or concept in a subject. The objective or concept will be specified on the field trip request form.
2. Teachers will plan activities that prepare students for the trip and follow-up activities that allow students to summarize, apply, and evaluate what they have learned.
C. The principal will approve all field trip requests using the criteria of relevance to the instructional program, time outside of class, and cost to the school and/or students.
1. School bus requisitions for approved field trips will be submitted to the Office of Transportation at least two weeks prior to the field trip.
2. The Office of Transportation will assign buses and drivers upon recommendation of the school.
D. The principal will consult with the office of the Division Superintendent before the approval of field trips outside the area.
E. Students may be charged a fee to pay the cost of field trip transportation and/or admission charges. Students may not be denied the opportunity to go on a field trip because of inability to pay such a fee.
F. Parents or legal guardians will be informed of field trips. The written permission of the individual parent or legal guardian must be obtained for each student participating on the field trip.
