INSTRUCTION

Field Trips

Field trips should be a valuable part of the instructional program and should serve to extend student learning. In planning field trips, schools will follow the regulation described below and refer to the Department of School Administration’s Guidelines for Field Trips and Information on Secondary After-School Activity Runs for additional field trip information.

  1. Field trips should relate to the approved curriculum.

    1. Field trips will relate to a specific objective or concept in a subject. The objective or concept will be specified on the field trip request form.

    2. Teachers will plan activities that prepare students for the trip and follow-up activities that allow students to summarize, apply, and evaluate what they have learned.

  2. The principal will approve all field trip requests using the criteria of relevance to the instructional program, time outside of class, and cost to the school and/or students.

    1. School bus requisitions for approved field trips will be submitted to the Office of Transportation Services at least two weeks prior to the field trip.

    2. School personnel will assign buses and drivers with assistance from the Office of Transportation as needed.

  3. All overnight and/or out-of-area field trips must be approved by the Director of Elementary Education, Assistant Superintendent for Middle School Education, or Assistant Superintendent for High School Education three weeks prior to departure date.

  4. Students may be charged a fee to pay the cost of field trip transportation and/or admission charges. Students may not be denied the opportunity to go on a field trip because of inability to pay such a fee.

  5. Parents or legal guardians of minor students will be informed of field trips. The written permission of a parent or legal guardian must be obtained for each minor student participating on the field trip.
