INSTRUCTION
Evaluation of the Curriculum
- Generally
Each principal and school staff will establish methods of evaluating the progress of individual students and the effectiveness of the instructional program in each classroom and school. Instructional personnel will work closely with principals and staff of schools throughout the year to assist in the improvement of instruction and student achievement. The principal, school staff and members of the community shall review biennially (known as the Continuous Improvement Process) the extent to which the school has met its prior goals and objectives, a forecast of enrollment changes, and analyze the school' s student performance data including data by grade level or academic department as necessary. Such outcomes shall be provided to parents of children at the school, the school community and the Superintendent.
- Guidelines
Appropriate means for division-wide curriculum evaluation will be established and maintained. Elements of this evaluation may include:
- Virginia Standards of Learning, end-of-grade and end-of-course test results, results of the biennial school plan review and testing programs such as the Virginia State Assessment Program, local assessment program, national standardized general achievement tests, national standardized tests in specific areas, and tests administered by other agencies;
- Study of student achievement records on a school-wide basis;
- Study of school drop-out data;
- Utilization of out-of-division services such as colleges, universities and regional research councils;
- Teacher and parent evaluation of student behaviors; and
- Virginia Department of Education specialists and services.
- Curriculum Course Evaluation/Review/Assessment
- Courses currently being implemented in the curriculum will be reviewed annually by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
- Courses currently being implemented in the curriculum will be assessed by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction on a rotating basis by program area in order to establish justification for retention based upon pertinence to the needs of students and the changing world in which they live.
- New courses will be assessed by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction during the first three years of implementation based on appropriateness of content, student enrollment, student/teacher suggestions, student success and needed adjustments.
- Periodic Reports
An evaluation of the curriculum and its effectiveness shall be made periodically and reported to the School Board by the Superintendent.
