ADMINISTRATION
Department Chairpersons/Leadership Positions
A. Department Chairpersons (Senior High and Elementary)
1. Teachers who are employed as department chairpersons shall be provided a minimum of one class period per day for departmental duties and, where feasible, will not be assigned non-teaching duties.
2. In secondary schools, when an applicant visits a school, and the principal or designee thinks the applicant is a likely prospect, it is recommended that, where feasible, the principal ask the applicant to confer with the appropriate department chairperson in the building and so notify the chairperson of the opportunity. The chairperson's report is requested promptly in writing to the principal.
3. Teachers who are employed as acting departmental chairpersons for those eligible departments shall be given the appropriate supplemental payment with the following conditions:
a. Acting chairperson status shall be limited to a period of three (3) years for those persons currently enrolled in a master's program reasonably related to the teacher's assignment.
b. Acting chairperson status shall be limited to a period of two (2) years for those persons who are not currently enrolled in a master's program which is reasonably related to the teacher's assignment.
4. If there is no teacher in a given department who meets the above qualifications for department chairperson, the person designated as acting department chairperson will continue to receive the additional duty supplement.
B. Leadership Positions (Middle Schools)
1. It is the responsibility of each school's Faculty Council to determine the following:
a. The leadership positions to be appointed and elected.
b. The methods used to select individuals for leadership positions.
c. The supplement for each leadership position.
2. Faculty councils must identify the procedure used to determine the value of the supplement for each leadership position.
3. Where feasible and appropriate, time free from assigned duties will be provided to perform the responsibilities of the leadership position.
4. It will be the principal's responsibility to evaluate the performance of staff members employed in leadership positions.
