SCHOOL BOARD BYLAWS
Compensation and Expenses
A. Compensation
The members of the School Board shall be compensated at a rate not to exceed the maximum salary as provided in accordance with state law. The chairman may, in the discretion of the Board, be compensated with such additional salary allowed by state law.
B. Expenses
Members of the School Board shall be reimbursed for private transportation in attending meetings of the school board and in conducting other official business of the school board at the same rate authorized for division employees.
All reasonable expenses for Board members, including travel, food and lodging, shall be paid by the Board when such members are acting in their official capacity as Board members or representing the Board at meetings, conferences and conventions. Board members may not exceed the personal allocation for meetings, conferences, and conventions determined by the Board without prior Board approval.
The School Division may employ a support staff person to assist Board members to fulfill the duties of their office.
Editor's Note
On August 17, 1999, the School Board adopted Resolution Permitted by Virginia
Code Section 22.1-32 to Pay board Chairman Additional Salary of $ 1,100 Above
that Specified for Board Members. Such Resolution shall remain in effect until
the School Board takes action to revoke it. A copy of the Resolution can be
found in the minutes for August 17, 1999.

B. The school board of the following cities and towns may pay each of its members an annual salary not to exceed the limits hereinafter set forth:
... Virginia Beach - six thousand dollars.
C. Any school board may in its discretion, pay the chairman of the school board an additional salary not
exceeding $1,100 per year upon passage of an appropriate resolution by (i) the school board whose membership is elected in whole or in part or (ii) the governing body of the appropriate county, city, or town whose school board is comprised solely of appointed members.
D. Any school board may in its discretion pay each of its members mileage for use of a private vehicle in attending meetings of the school board and in conducting other official business of the school board...
Code of Va., §2.1-20.8. Traveling expenses on state business; public or private transportation. Pursuant to §2.1-20.10, any person traveling on state business shall be entitled to reimbursement for certain actual expenses as are necessary and ordinarily incidental to such travel. If transportation is by public means, reimbursement shall be at the actual cost thereof. If transportation is by private means, reimbursement shall be at the rate as specified in the current general appropriation act of the Commonwealth.
