SCHOOL BOARD BYLAWS

Orientation/In-service Programs

A. Orientation

1. Generally

The current School Board shall provide an orientation program to new School Board members upon their election and before those members take office.

2. Documents

The Superintendent shall furnish every member a copy of the Board's bylaws and policies manual, the regulations for the school division, the current budget, a directory of personnel, a copy of Virginia school laws to include the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, the Virginia Conflicts of Interests Act and such other documents deemed essential to the operation of the division.

B. In-service Programs

1. Generally

Annually the School Board shall plan an in-service program for its members which shall include, but not be limited to, those areas enumerated in Code of Virginia § 22.1-253.13:5 cited in the legal reference to this bylaw.

2. Activities

In-service activities may include:

a. Seminars developed cooperatively by the Department of Education and
the Virginia School Boards Association.

b. Attending regional, state and national educational conferences and conventions.

c. Workshops.

d. Retreats.

e. Guest speakers.

f. Visitations to Schools

g. Trial run over the bus transportation routes.

h. Orientation programs conducted by administrators and/or Board legal counsel.

Each local school board shall require (i) its members to participate annually in in-service programs on personnel, curriculum and current issues in education as part of their service on the local board and (ii) require the division superintendent to participate annually in professional development activities at the local, state or national levels.
