Sharing the good news…
No matter when you turn on the radio or TV, pick up the newspaper, or check out the latest Internet blog or news story, education and what’s happening in our schools often takes center stage. Sadly, this news is often more negative than positive with pundits and commentators wringing their crying towels over the state of public education.

Well, in VBCPS, we have worked hard to change that stereotype. Or, more specifically, 91 school media liaisons have worked hard, first, to ferret out the good news, and then to make sure it gets disseminated to all available media outlets so our successes get the attention and public accolades they deserve.

Since this program was initiated – more than 19 years ago – thousands of photos, announcements and stories about Virginia Beach schools have appeared in media outlets across Hampton Roads, the state, and even regionally and nationally. Oftentimes, it is our school media liaisons who have been responsible for getting the information and then contacting media with news releases and story ideas that generate placements.

You may be aware that school media liaisons are typically selected by each principal with the express purpose of gathering good news and then publicizing it through news releases, feature story ideas, and announcements. In addition, they often get out the news of upcoming events as well, a strategy that guarantees participation. In short, VBCPS media liaisons do a wonderful job of telling the VBCPS story and of highlighting great human interest pieces about staff and students.

We thought you would find it interesting to know who our school media liaisons are this year, especially if you have good news to share. Therefore, we are publishing the name and position of each school’s media liaison as well as several offices’ liaisons. Please contact these dedicated folks if you learn of stories that need to be told or of events that the public would enjoy knowing about or attending.

Hats off to our 2009-2010 media liaisons!
