372 New Employees Welcomed Aboard in New Onboarding Process
The VBCPS Department of Human Resources in cooperation with the Office
of Organizational Development welcomed 372 new employees to the VBCPS
“crew” in an innovative "onboarding" process this summer. With the
new employment process, which has replaced the previous contract signing
and new employee orientation sessions, all VBCPS employees serving in
allocated positions or on temporary contracts are provided with an orientation
prior to beginning their new jobs.
Department
of Human Resources recruitment specialist Bernard Platt
and Office of Organizational Development specialist Robin Kitsis
welcome new employees to an “onboarding” session!
Twice weekly, new employees were presented with a videotaped welcome
from Dr. Merrill and VBCPS students, information about Compass to 2015,
and also our vision and mission statements. Representatives from the
Office of Employee Relations explained expectations for standards of
conduct. Participants also received information developed by the Office
of Organizational Development regarding annual employee mandatory training,
professional development opportunities, employee self service, and how
to use the Intranet. Human Resources staff guided new employees through
the signing of contract paperwork, presented the Employee Handbook,
and provided Benefits packets prepared by the Office of Consolidated
Benefits, which also offered periodic information fairs throughout the
summer.
According
to feedback received from participants, the "onboarding" sessions have
been “informative and easy to understand” as well as “well-organized and efficient”. Participants commented that the
HR staff and "onboarding" team members were friendly, and their kindness
was appreciated. The presentation was referred to as “energetic”
and “impressive” and new employees remarked that the "onboarding"
process was “a nice, smooth process” that was “comprehensive”.
Arie Lea Throne had this to say about her experience: “Today I
attended the "onboarding" process to be a VBCPS employee. I must
say, it was extremely organized. The speakers and Power Point
(presentations) were great. I learned so much and people answered
my many questions—with a smile.”

Going forward,
all new employees will receive this valuable information as a joint
effort between the Department of Human Resources, the Office of Consolidated
Benefits, and the Office of Organizational Development at weekly "onboarding"
sessions throughout the year. Please join us in welcoming our new “crewmates”
aboard!
