TOCLI Welcomes new teachers!
While many of us were enjoying that last week of summer before returning to schools and offices, a group of new teachers – 141 strong – were already hard at work. You may be aware that new teachers – those new to the profession as well as those who have experience but are new to VBCPS or who have been away from teaching at the beach for two or more years – attend a special pre-school in-service, TOCLI (Teacher Orientation and Continuous Learning Institute). Sponsored by the Office of Organizational Development, TOCLI provides new teachers the benefits of a summer orientation specifically designed to prepare them for the first two weeks of school.

Dividing their time between Tallwood High School, which hosted the training, and their home schools, new teachers devoted four days to becoming familiar with VBCPS and the specifics of their particular assignments. Curriculum coordinators worked with individual groups of teachers and special breakout sessions were organized for specialties such as special education and elective, core, novice, and experienced (but new to or returning to VBCPS) teachers. They also spent some time focusing on Compass to 2015, the division’s core values, teambuilding, and getting to know their mentors.

All in all, TOCLI was a great success and provided new teachers networking opportunities as well as a head start in getting ready for the new school year. Check out the video overview for a taste of TOCLI!
