Russian Federation Friendship with VBCPS

Congratulations to Lisa Walker, gifted resource teacher at Tallwood High School, who returned to the Republics of Tatarstan and Bashkortosta, located in the Russian Federation, September 19–27. Lisa traveled there in 2008 to work with Russian teachers and students. She was the keynote speaker at three different schools’ Professional Development Conferences, speaking to future teachers at Kazan State University. The US Embassy Staff in Moscow has written the grant funding this education project through a Fulbright Hays fellowship.

The goal of the project is to promote and exchange innovative experience among U.S. and Russian secondary school teachers and teacher-trainers in a broad range of subjects by conducting workshops and master classes. Walker presented a program on the U.S. system of education and teaching methodology. In addition to conducting staff development for approximately 150 teachers on Understanding By Design (UBD) Unit Construction and 21st Century Skills, Walker hopes to also be working directly with students both in Russia and Virginia Beach on a problem based learning project (PBL) using distance learning technology.

Citywide School Nurse of the Year Named
Congratulations to Lois Smith, school nurse at
Cox High School
, on being selected the 2009 Citywide School Nurse of the Year by the Virginia Beach School Nurses Association. Smith was cited for her outstanding work in the school clinic as well as with students. Smith not only coordinates the school’s medical club, she also teaches Health Issues Facing College Freshman as part of a college-bound reading class taught by English/reading teacher Bekki Keener.

Among the topics covered are the “freshman fifteen weight gain” that often happens to college freshmen, information on various illnesses and how best to take care of oneself, the importance of having a first aid kit and what it should contain, why immunizations are important, and what diseases typically affect college-age students. Covered as well are drugs and alcohol and binge drinking. In addition, Smith teaches CPR in ninth-grade health classes in tandem with the teacher and conducts a blood pressure lab in the AP biology class. She also has taught a N-O-T on Smoking class to students who want to quit smoking.

As club adviser for the Cox Medical Association, Smith assists students in their exploration of various professions in the health field. The club sponsors two blood drives a year for the American Red Cross and adopts a family at the holidays through social services to bring them holiday cheer! Smith has served on the board of the Virginia Beach School Nurses Association for 10 years.

Smith graduated in 1969 from Ann May School of Nursing at the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Asbury Park New Jersey. She received her RNC, a specialty certification, in Inpatient Obstetrics in 1979, and has worked in labor and delivery and mother/baby as well as Emergency Room nursing. She has also taught childbirth classes. Smith has served as the school nurse at Cox High School for the last 12 years.

Shalom. Global Studies & World Languages Academy students are youth ambassador to Israel!
An exciting overseas adventure is coming to 10 students from Tallwood High School’s Global Studies & World Languages Academy (GSWLA). In October, they are participating in a youth ambassadors exchange program sponsored by the America Israel Friendship League. The month-long program begins October 28 when the Academy’s “youth ambassadors” welcome 10 students from Israel as exchange students. The Israeli students will stay with host families and attend school at Tallwood as regular students. They will also be visiting local sites of interest and generally learning about life in our community.

After a week spent locally, the Israeli exchange students and Tallwood students will join other American and Israeli Youth Ambassadors from across the nation in Washington, D.C. and New York. They will then head to Israel and spend a week in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem before they are slated to stay with Israeli host families around the country. During this part of the exchange they will have the opportunity to experience local Israeli customs and hospitality much as the Israeli youth did in Virginia Beach.

As a point of information, the America Israel Friendship League (AIFL) was established by the U.S. and Israeli governments in 1979 and is a highly successful international exchange which encourages inter-cultural understanding and communication. At the same time, the exchange also develops the awareness that the strength of democracy rests in the diversity of its people and in its social, political and economic institutions. To date, more than 5000 American and Israeli students of varying cultures, nationalities and faiths have participated.

The total cost for this exciting cultural experience is shared by AIFL, VBCPS, the Global Studies Academy and participating students. The cost to each student; however, is still substantial. As a result, the GSWLA community is working to raise $1,000 per student. Among other fundraisers, a golf tournament is planned for Wednesday, October 7, at Red Wing Golf Course in Virginia Beach. If you would like to play or help sponsor the event, please contact academy coordinator Rebecca Gurley at rebecca.gurley@vbschools.com or by telephone
at 648-5700.
