Audrey Reyes, seventh-grade math teacher, is a recipient of Princess Anne Middle School's I Make a Difference award. Well known among the faculty for her patience, math expertise, and sense of humor, Reyes has contributed to excellence at the school for over nine years.

Congratulations to Trantwood Elementary School computer resource specialist Sheila Teri on winning the Integrator 2009 Excellence in Technology award. Presented annually by WHRO and the Consortium of Interactive Instruction, the award recognizes outstanding teachers, integrators, and administrators for their leadership in integrating technology into the classroom. Director of Instructional Technology Bill Johnsen and Instructional Technology coordinator Joan Schlegelmilch presented the award to Teri in June.

White Oaks Elementary kindergarten assistant Valerie Simerson and kindergarten teacher Anne-Marie Dupont not only make a great teaching team but also showed their school spirit on Twin Day!

Teacher assistants Karen Farquer and Roberta Perkins also dressed alike to show school spirit on Twin Day.

Salem High School Virginia Teachers for Tomorrow (VTfT) students Kayla Willette and LeSha Wrim were the two VTfT students at their school who were awarded a Future Teacher Contract by VBCPS. This award is presented to the two outstanding senior teacher cadets from each VTfT class in the division. Upon satisfactory completion of college requirements and acquisition of their teaching certificate, Willette and Wrim will receive a teaching contract with Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Pictured are (bottom row, left to right) LeSha Wrim, Kayla Willette; (second row) Lisa Wrim, LaSha’s mother; Thomas Clouser, VTfT teacher; Teri Willette, Kayla’s mother.
Thoroughgood Elementary principal Cheryl Zigrang and assistant principal Sharon Shewbridge organized a “guaranteed” stress reliever for faculty and staff at SOL time – a Cornhole Tournament. Thirty teams signed up and brackets were created. Teams played each other before and after school. Not only was tossing the beanbag across the room into a hole a great way to relieve stress, it was also a major spectator sport. Games were announced and the teams slowly dwindled down to only two -- the PE and music departments were battling to be the top Cornholers. The final tournament was held during field day and students were allowed to see what crazy game their teachers were all buzzing about. And the winners? The PE teachers Joe Reynolds and Suzanne Hagelberger, pictured here sporting their winnings...their own Cornhole bags!
Jacquelyn McGovern received Princess Anne Middle School's I Make a Difference award in June. Following work with the airlines and in the area of human resources, she began her teaching career in Prince William County and came to Princess Anne Middle School as a special education teacher eight years ago. At PA Middle she has collaborated with almost every teacher in the school, across all subjects and grade levels. Well known around the building for her hard work and consistent caring for students, McGovern makes a true difference every day.

Green Run Elementary fifth-grade teachers Sherry Butler (left) and Ginger Oilveto (right) enjoy themselves at the annual fifth-grade pool party in June.

Is she riding a bike in school? Before announcements on the last day of school, June 18, Shelton Park Elementary School principal Lou Anne Metzger rode a brand new bike through the halls, waving and exclaiming, “Happy Last Day of School!” For the past six years, a new bicycle has been given to the most outstanding fifth grader at the Fifth Grade Bridging Ceremony on the last day of school. Metzger “revved” up the excitement before the ceremony as she rode the new bike through the halls.
Allen Brewer, physical education teacher, received the I Make a Difference award at Princess Anne Middle School in June. A 17-year teaching veteran of P.A. Middle, Brewer has also enthusiastically coached the wrestling and boys track teams. He delivers a positive influence not only through sound teaching practices, but also through his unfaltering gentlemanly demeanor. Students are treated to a positive dose of exemplary conduct and behavior daily.
Helen Kuhns (left), Education and Outreach Coordinator for Lynnhaven River NOW, recently presented a banner for the Pearl School Award to Bayside Elementary School third-grade teacher Joy Drumm, teacher assistant Linda Sollner, and principal Lori Hasher. As an environmental organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the Lynnhaven River, Lynnhaven River NOW rewards schools that undertake projects that teach students watershed concepts and help them to develop environment-friendly habitats. Under the leadership of school staff and SCA members, Bayside Elementary students earned the Pearl School Award. Among the many projects they undertook were the planting of a butterfly garden in the school courtyard, a schoolwide campaign to reuse and recycle paper and other resources, the creation of a drop-off box in the school for the proper disposal of used batteries, and many other efforts to practice good stewardship of resources.
Ho,ho,ho! It's flu season! Dayna Miller, Centerville Elementary's school nurse, shared the latest health information with staff members in preparation for the upcoming school year.
The Advanced Technology Center (ATC) sponsored its Sixth Annual Summer Camp in August. The camp was divided into three teams of 20 rising ninth graders, led by First Colonial High School ISS coordinator Theo Copeland (pictured left); ATC permanent sub Lou Anne Franklin; and Princess Anne Middle School security assistant James W. Hill. The camp included hands-on activities in information technology, telecommunications, engineering technology and marketing. Several field trips and teambuilding activities were also provided.
