A united effort for United Way

True to its nature, the Virginia Beach City Public Schools, has once again this year given generously to the annual United Way campaign. The spirit of giving is certainly alive and well in this school division.

According to Department of Budget and Finance budget analyst and United Way Campaign co-director Fran Thomas, $481,710 was raised this year by students and staff. This is remarkable, especially considering the difficult economy and the fact that VBCPS has experienced declining enrollment.

Special thanks to our United Way coordinators who worked so hard and long to ensure the campaign was successful. Incredibly, VBCPS had a 53.2 percent employee participation rate in the 2008 campaign, which is the highest rate posted by school divisions in our area. In addition, 82 schools ran student campaigns. Thank you to the students and SCA advisors for their tireless work, adding $65,000 to the final total.

A recognition celebration was held in March to honor those who worked so hard. Well done, VBCPS, and thank you!

Congratulations to the following award winners!
