Erika Reed and John Sutton, both sixth-grade social studies teachers, design and plant a garden to attract butterflies at Bayside Middle School. The teachers sponsor the Green Club at the school which educates the students and staff about recycling and conservation. Recently the club held a used cell phone collection drive to fund the garden.
Congratulations to Princess Anne High School art teacher Betsy DiJulio on having her student’s art work win the top prize in the Congressional Art Competition sponsored by Congressman Glenn Nye's office. The work – a portrait of the student's grandfather eating a dumpling with chopsticks – will hang at the capitol for a year. In addition, the student artist will be honored at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. along with other winners from across the country. NOTE: Betsy DiJulio is profiled as the 2010 Citywide Teacher of the Year in the lead article of this issue of e-Kaleidoscope.

Delegate Joe Bouchard presented Pembroke Elementary School speech and language pathologist Pamela Roberts a Commendation from the Virginia General Assembly in recognition of her being named the schools 2010 Teacher of the Year.

City traffic engineer Brian Proctor visited the classes of Ocean Lakes Elementary fifth-grade teachers Jeanne Miesse and Susan Sabine in May. Proctor discussed the meaning of various signs and also reviewed the math formulas used by traffic engineers in designing traffic flow at intersections. Pictured are Brian Proctor and Jeanne Miesse.
Centerville Elementary fifth-grade teacher Rick DeLugo and security assistant Mary Bare volunteered their Saturday to give the 25-year-old school yard a landscaping facelift.
Vickie Dean, seventh-grade English teacher, has received the I Make a Difference award at Princess Anne Middle School. Having worked at the school over nine years, her abilities have served her well in teaching students over multiple grade levels as well as in content areas of special education, English or her favorite, social studies.
