Office of Secondary Instructional Services director Joe Burnsworth, secondary English instructional specialist Fran Sharer and mathematics instructional specialist Dena McElligot were recent presenters at the College Board Major School Division Conference in Atlanta. Their presentation detailed VBCPS’s success in using a “Summary of Answers” approach to improving student achievement on SAT tests. This strategy involves holding a workshop for teachers during which they are provided explanations of why specific answers on a variety of College Board questions are correct. This assists them in explaining similar concepts to students. The strategy not only helps improve student achievement on SAT tests, but it also increases scores and enrollment of underserved populations in AP courses.
