Redistricting plan approved by the Virginia Beach School Board
Redrawn lines to become effective with the
2004-05 and 2005-06 school years

The Virginia Beach School Board approved a proposal for redrawing some of the division’s attendance boundaries during its regular meeting on March 3. The redistricting plan, proposed by the Building Utilization Committee (BUC), affects 14 schools. The School Board’s approval followed an extensive process that included meetings with principals and PTA presidents from the affected schools, four public information meetings for parents and interested citizens, and a public hearing.

The School Board, during its March 2 meeting,
approved the plan as proposed.

Designed to ease overcrowding at some schools as well as make better use of underutilized facilities, the plan calls for the redistricting of six elementary schools in order to populate Elementary School 2005. Under construction in the high growth southeastern area of Virginia Beach, the new school is schedule is for occupancy in the fall of 2005. The approved redistricting plan calls for the following changes to current elementary, middle, and high school boundaries to be effective with the start of the 2004-05 school year, except where otherwise noted:
Elementary
• Portions of the Towne Square residential housing development (Park Place and The Carriage Homes, both under construction) will be reassigned from Kempsville Meadows to White Oaks Elementary School.
• Selected students on the south side of Holland Road between Dam Neck Road and Monet Drive will be reassigned from Landstown to Christopher Farms Elementary School.
• Selected students from Red Mill, Strawbridge, and Princess Anne elementary schools will be reassigned from their current schools to Elementary School 2005. All changes will be effective for the 2005-2006 school year.
• In addition, selected areas in the southeastern area of Virginia Beach have been included in the attendance area for Elementary School 2005. Schools affected include Strawbridge Elementary sending students to Ocean Lakes and Red Mill elementary schools; Red Mill sending students to Princess Anne Elementary; Princess Anne Elementary sending students
to Strawbridge Elementary; and Creeds Elementary sending students to Princess Anne and Red Mill elementary schools. All changes will be effective for the 2005-2006 school year.
• Also, North Landing Elementary will be sending selected students to Princess Anne Elementary School, effective with the start of the 2005-2006 school year. Rising fifth-grade students in the Rollingwood, Litchfield Manor, and Court-house Forest neighborhoods may choose to remain at North Landing Elementary for School Year 2005-2006 and bus service will be provided for them. This provision is being implemented because School Board policy recommends that students not be transferred more that once at any school level. These neighborhoods were redistricted in 2001. This means a student who was a kindergartner in 2001 was transferred and will be eligible for transfer again in the fifth grade in 2005.

Middle
• Selected students in several neighborhoods – Colony Point, Indian Lakes, Kemps Quarter Condominiums, Lakes End Condominiums, Sutters Creek, and Winchester Point Condominiums - will be reassigned from Kempsville Middle School to Salem Middle School.

High school
• An undeveloped area - the future Brenneman Farms condominium development - has been reassigned from Kempsville High to Green Run High School. This does not affect any students currently enrolled at Kempsville High School.
