VBCPS to Offer Geometry Online in Summer School

Are you a high school student who would be interested in taking an online course? Are you the parent of a high school student who you believe would benefit from taking a course outside of the traditional classroom setting?
If you answered “yes” to one of these questions, then this opportunity might interest you: Virginia Beach City Public Schools will embark upon an online learning initiative this summer as part of the division’s summer school program. Geometry will be the first course to go online. Students who have successfully completed Algebra I or Algebra I X will be eligible to enroll. (Note: Students cannot receive credit for both Geometry and Introduction to Geometry or Geometry X.)
According to Dr. Sheila Magula, associate superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, the school system has plans in the works to put other courses online in the near future. “We’re starting with geometry because results of a student survey given last spring indicated that math was a high interest subject area. And as geometry is a very visual math, we believe it will lend itself well to the online classroom,” she said. Magula noted that while the majority of the class will be “virtual,” some face-to-face interactions between students and the teacher will be required.

The division is in the process of developing the initial registration packet. Those who have questions or would like to put their names on a waiting list to receive this information should contact Eva Roupas, distance learning coordinator, via phone at 427-4001 or email at ekroupas@vbschools.com. Please include your name and your full address including zip code.
