Summer School 2008

Who: Rising 9th through 12th grade students who have successfully completed Algebra I or Algebra I(X) and meet all other eligibility requirements may apply. 

Students and parents should note that all programs are dependent on sufficient enrollment and the availability of qualified and appropriately endorsed instructional staff. The school will make the FINAL decision as to whether or not the student should take the online course.  This class must be taken for credit:  NO Audits.

What: Online Geometry

  • This course addresses the same mathematics content as a traditional Geometry course but is delivered over the Internet through an online learning management system.
  • Online courses require different skills and learning styles from traditional, face-to-face courses. For instance, students in an online course are responsible for scheduling their own "class time." Motivation and self-discipline are essential for success in an online course.

When: The course begins on the first day of Summer School, June 23, 2008, with a mandatory face-to-face orientation for students and parents at 6:30 p.m. at Landstown High. All coursework must be completed by the last day of school.

Important Dates for Summer 2008 Online Geometry:

  • April 25 through June 17 – Registration form available
  • June 17 – Deadline to submit Online Course Registration Form as an e-mail attachment to to e-mail address and retain a copy for yourself. Your copy must be taken to the designated face-to-face registration at the designated Host Site School for this course on June 18 or June 19. Course fee will be collected at the face-to-face registration.
  • June 18 or 19 – Face-to-face registration at Landstown High. Summer School fee to be collected at this time.
  • June 23 at 6:30 p.m., Landstown High, mandatory face-to-face orientation for students and parents
  • June 23 – All Virtual Virginia Beach e-Learning courses begin.
  • July 15 – Face-to-face midterm exam
  • July 31 – Face-to-face SOL test
  • August 8 – Face-to-face final exam
  • August 8 – All Summer School online courses end

Where: The course will be taken online; however, there will be several required face-to-face meetings. Students will need a computer with Internet access at home, where the coursework will be done.

Cost: The fee for online summer school courses is the same as for face-to-face summer school courses.

Drop Policy: According to School Board Regulation 5-26.2, a year course dropped on or after the eighth day of summer school must be counted as an "E" and included in class rank. A semester course dropped on or after the second day after the issuance of progress reports must be counted as an "E" and included in class rank. The drop should be recorded as "WF".

Testing:

  • Students will be required to take the midterm and final exam in a face-to-face setting (Site of face-to-face event to be determined)
  • Students will take the SOL test at designated Summer School sites in a face-to-face setting
